What is Spine Alignment? A spine can be visualized as a longitudinal line or plane on a golf shaft that is more resistant to bending than any other line or plane. By locating the spine it can be placed in a predetermined position.
Is Spining still important in the golf industry?
Golf Shaft Spine Orientation. There are two main positions that you can align the spine in, the swing plane and the droop plane. This is explained in detail in this article but it is felt that most benefits come to the golfer when the spine is aligned in the droop plane orientation. The swing plane means that the spine is perpendicular to the clubface and the droop plane is parallel with …
Should I spine align my golf shafts?
A Spine should be visualized as a backbone or ridge in the golf shaft, running down its length, more resistant to bending than any other part of the shaft. When a golf club is swung it is forced to bend; this flexed shaft will then naturally want to straighten and return towards it’s spine and should the spine is misaligned to the club face it will leave the club face slightly open or closed …
Do shafts need to be tested for spine location?
Hireko Golf’s technical director Jeff Summitt will demonstrate how to find the spine of a golf shaft. A spine is an inconsistency created during the manufacturing process where the steel or graphite shaft may not be perfectly round, straight or where the wall thickness is not uniform around the circumference of the shaft. Once the spine is detected, there is a proper orientation …
What is the best orientation for the spine in golf?
A golf shaft is said to have a 'spine' if it is inconsistent in its stiffness when bending in different directions. Aligning all the shafts within a set so their spines point in the same direction (either forward or back) is called 'spining.'

What Is Spining?
We turned to golf equipment guru and custom clubmaker Tom Wishon, founder of Tom Wishon Golf Technology, for a more in-depth explanation of spining.
The Importance of Spining in Today's Golf Shafts
Spining was once a pretty important service provided by custom club fitters to highly skilled golfers and to other golfers who love diving deep into the technical side of golf equipment. But with the improved golf shaft manufacturing standards of today, is spining still important?
Do Recreational Golfers Need to Think About Spining?
The answer to this question is easy: No. The spining of golf shafts is not something that any recreational golfer needs to be concerned about, nor is it a service on which any recreational golfer needs to spend money today.
What is Spine Aligning?
First, every golf shaft has a “spine”, and that spine is stiffer than the rest of the circumference of the shaft. (Nobody should argue that the spine is not the stiffest part of the shaft, but proof can be seen when rotating a shaft on a frequency machine. You get a stiffer reading when the spine is oriented the direction the shaft is deflected.)
Are there any negatives to Spine Aligning?
1. It is a fairly time consuming process, so it costs some money. (It’s not very expensive if you’re starting with a new set of custom clubs, But if you want to spine align an existing set of clubs, it can get quite costly.)

If you use the search function at the top of the page you'll find enough material to keep you busy and utterly confused for several days. If you'd rather not go that route then here's a summary of what you'd find: essentially spine aligning, floing, puring are different ways of orienting the shaft to so the it bends along a neutral plane.

I have all my irons/wedges spine aligned, have checked the spine on my R9 Driver,#N#and just assembled an Adams A3 25 degree hybrid with a steel 5 iron shaft.#N#If i miss a shot, i know it is MY fault, not the Equipment.#N#Hows that for a simple reason to spine align.#N#I don't argue any more on the subject, but Thanks GOLF WRX for Teaching Me.

LOBUB, what's so bad about being a 2-capper and not knowing what spine aligning is? I find clubs I like and that work....then I stick with them!! I learned to play golf in the good ol' USMC and with our beloved country being at war for 10 plus years, it doesn't give me much time to catch up on golf equipment talk and tech.

Here's some credible evidence for you.#N#1) If Tom Wishon says that he was in on the testing of shafts and the result of that testing showed both asymmetry and benefits from re-orientation, I have to believe that his statment of improved performance and flight is credible.#N#2) There are many tour professionals, including Padraig Harrington, Colin Montgomerie, Tommy Armour III, Gary Nicklaus, and several dozen more, who have gone on record that they see the benefit of the SST Company.

I don't doubt a word of what you wrote, tempered by the fact that "feel" is non-quantifiable and what a PGA Touring professional can perceive, is probably far in excess of what the average golfer can appreciate.

Anything that doesn't make it worst id always a good thing to try or add IMO.

When I purchased my new set of iron last year, I spent couple days researched this subject on internet and I decided that there's enough evidence out there to invest in shaft puring on my new set of iron. Love my new iron and no regret.
