All of those barrier islands have huge, deep, white sand beaches. Then I went to Oak Island and was kind of disappointed. The beach is really, really shallow at high tide (maybe 20-30 feet deep?) and there is a wide strip of gray/black silt covering most of the dry sand. Its actually crunchy when you walk on it.
