Are 17 or 18-inch rims better?

Subjectively, both the 17-inch and 18-inch wheels and tires were in the sweet spot of grip, braking performance, ride comfort, and steering feel. Moving from 17-inchers to 18s barely degrades ride quality, and the additional grip is welcome.Apr 9, 2010

What is the perfect wheel size?

The sweet spot for most of our muscle cars and track cars is 17- or 18-inch wheels. This isn't just my opinion, but that of many industry insiders. The 12- or 13-inch rotors usually chosen by the road racing crowd fit in these wheels just fine, and don't need the additional clearance given by a 19-inch or larger wheel.Apr 1, 2009

Can you put bigger tires on a VW Golf?

To increase wheel diameter but keep overall tire height the same, any size offered as a factory option on a MkV, MkVI or MkVII Golf will work. For some reference, the same height in 17" is 225/45-17. The same height in 18" is 225/40-18. Both of those are factory VW sizes.Oct 8, 2015

Can I use R17 instead of R18?

Yes, you should complain. The R17 tires are narrower than the R18's, which makes them slightly more dangerous because you lose a tiny amount of contact surface (on paper anyway), but mostly there is a huge price difference between 17 inch and 18 inch wheels (for some reason). If you paid for 18's, you should get 18's.Mar 3, 2014

What is the advantage of 17 inch wheels?

17-inch tires get better traction since there is more rubber on the road, especially for vehicles carrying more than average weight.

Which tire size is cheaper 17 or 18?

that more common 17" will usually be a good bit cheaper than a comparable size tire in 18". Like '5 tires for the price of 4' cheaper. Taller sidewall more better for real off-road use.Aug 15, 2019

Does changing tire size affect transmission?

So, do tires affect the transmission? Yes! By increasing the size of your tires (in diameter). When the size increases it interferes with the gear ratio.Jul 27, 2020

Do bigger wheels affect speed?

If you choose bigger wheels, you will improve the stability of your car and the range of braking distance will be shortened; A larger diameter means that the wheel will be heavier and consequently speed will be slightly compromised during acceleration (depending also on the torque of the car);Aug 1, 2016

Can I use 245 tires instead of 235?

The quick answer is yes you can replace 245/50-18 tyres with 235/50-18 but they will have 10mm (0.4 in) smaller overall diameter. Will only slightly effect speedo and odometer - ie speedo will read about 1.5% high.

One thing I get asked a lot is what VW wheel offsets are and how to work them out.

Jon R306

Not really a good idea, as the rims are 216mm wide so there will be a little bit of "stretching." Since this fitting is not recommended by tyre makers it could - just could - invalidate your insurance were it even remotely likely to be the cause of an accident. You may therefore be better advised to exchange the 225s for 235s if you possibly can.

Good move imho. I say that backed by 11 years in rubber/tyres & engineering, also by a history of taking risks that didn't necessarily pay off....

I've decided they will be going on the R come the colder weather.......just need to order some VW centre caps as the R caps are too small to fit.
