I've voted manufacturers guidelines, but do vary the revs quite a bit as well.

Not sure they are bench tested and if they are, it won’t be for very long. Bench testing does nothing for running in as it’s a short process. End of the day, it’s your car but I ran my mk7 in for 1000 miles.

Exactly what I did with mine but I did it for 1000 miles. I always wait until the oil has reached at least 80 degrees before using the power. I’ve hardly ever had to put any oil in and I’m convinced it’s down to proper running in at the start of my ownership and warming up since.
