What's the verdict?
As always, whether a plug-in hybrid works for you depends on whether you’re able to regularly charge and how many 30-mile+ trips you tend to make. If the answer to the former is ‘often’ and the latter ‘barely ever’ then the GTE would clearly make more financial sense than a GTI or something of a similar breed.

Volkswagen Golf GTE DRIVING EXPERIENCE
The concept of the Golf GTE is to offer a sporty driving experience, but also an environmentally-friendly one, and it succeeds in achieving these twin aims. So if you want to do the school run and a shopping trip on electric power with no tailpipe emissions, you can do that.

The official combined economy of the Golf GTE is 156.9mpg. As any regular reader of Green Car Guide will know, this is a useless figure, as it completely depends on the driving cycle of the car. If you drive 30 miles primarily using electric power then you’re likely to get an economy figure of over 100mpg.
PRICE AND MODEL RANGE
The Volkswagen Golf GTE Advance costs £29,645 after the UK government plug-in car grant of £2,500 (the price of the GTE has been reduced by Volkswagen by around £2,500 compared to the previous model).
Conclusion
We like cars that try and do everything, as long as they do everything reasonably well, and this is certainly something that the Volkswagen Golf GTE comes close to achieving. It offers economy and performance. It’s good to drive, it’s refined, and it’s practical. It’s even cheaper than the previous GTE model thanks to Volkswagen’s price cut.
How much power does a Golf GTE have?
The Golf GTE shares its underpinnings with the Cupra Leon eHybrid and Skoda Octavia vRS iV, and, surprise surprise, they have exactly the same power – 242bhp from the 1.4-litre turbocharged petrol engine and electric motor combined.
Does the GTE have progressive steering?
Sharper intrusions, such as expansion joints, can cause a bit of a jolt, mind. The GTE comes as standard with something called progressive steering . This has just two turns between locks, making winding your way around a multi storey car park easy, but can make judging quicker curves tricky.
Is the GTE good?
The GTE’s is okay most of the time, but it can be in consistent if you’re stopping from high speed, making it trickier to slow down smoothly. The six-speed dual-clutch gearbox is, in the main, smooth, as is the transition between petrol and electric modes.
Is the GTE subdued?
What they and private owners will trade for such versatility and frugality is character. The new GTI has it in abundance, but the GTE is more subdued. As ever, which one to go for will come down to how well you can utilise the electrical portion of the GTE’s slick powertrain.
Does the Golf GTE use electric power?
Frankly, on electric power alone the Golf GTE feels more than adequately swift and responsive for city driving. And smartly, the driver can specify how much electrical energy is used through four different levels, allowing you to save electricity for later use.
Does Volkswagen have a real world driving range?
While that increase might not sound like much, Volkswagen says the real world driving range is significantly increased, owing to greater efficiency from the electric motor and brake energy regeneration system. Meanwhile the combustion engine, updated with new fuel injectors operating at a higher pressure than before, continues to deliver the same 148bhp. The electric motor, which adopts measures already brought to the larger motor found in the ID3, provides an additional 9bhp for 107bhp in total, together with 243lb ft of torque.
Does hybrid mode increase torque?
Switching into Hybrid mode instantly increases performance, though it comes at the expense of refinement, most notably with the unpleasant drone of the petrol engine on light-to-moderate throttle loads, which proves a bit excessive at times. There’s plentiful torque, however.
Volkswagen Golf GTE 0-62mph, top speed and acceleration
There's plenty of power on tap – especially with a fully charged battery. The 0-62mph sprint takes 6.7 seconds in Sport mode and there's similarly urgent acceleration available whenever you need it provided you don't mind making the most of the slightly unrefined petrol engine, which can get noisy under hard throttle.
Handling
If you happen to test-drive a Golf GTE right after its Golf GTI counterpart, the most noticeable difference will be in the car's weight.
