Course History

The original Juniper Golf Course was built on property owned by the Federal Aviation Administration next to the Redmond Airport. The front 9 opened in 1952 designed by Fred Sparks and the second 9 opened in 1987 designed by Tim Berg. The expansion of Highway 97 and increasing lease rates from the FAA caused the original course to close.

Why It Is There

Fred Sparks, a local businessman and golfer in Redmond, thought a course should be built in the area. For 10 years he worked with others to first acquire the property and then build the original 9. By the time the original course was closing, the Members (and the City) came together to continue Mr. Sparks’ dream in a new location.

I Wish I Would Have Known Before I Played

Almost all the greens have a ridgeback near the center dividing the left and right sides. The greens are also generally hard and fast and run away from the fairway. So unless you have really good spin control, running the ball up to the correct side of the green is the way to go.

The “Juniper” sign in front of the course (as you turn onto Elkhorn) is from the original course.

Why Play This Course

An attractive, very well maintained, beautifully designed course with a friendly staff and a nice practice facility. It is one of the best bargains for a solid Central Oregon course.

What is the easiest hole in golf?

Thirteen is the easiest hole on the course. A short and flat one shotter to a wide green that is protected on the left front and back with two small bunkers.

Where is the 16th green in golf?

The green is located at the bottom of a left to right slope that can be used to kick drives onto the front of the putting surface. At forty paces deep, a tee shot to the wrong section of the green can leave a long birdie putt.

What is the best par 4 for golf?

Twelve is a great short par four that will quicken the pulse of anyone who can carry their drive more than two hundred and fifty yards. The green sits up slightly so you need to keep your tee shot straight and true to get it all the way there. A hook or slice will probably be lost so unless you are confident with the big stick a lay up may be the best play.

What is the longest par 3?

The one shot eighth is the longest par three on the course. The green is fairly narrow but deep as it runs at an angle from front left to back right. A lone bunker guards the right side while the land slopes off to the left and backside of the green.

Is the fairway at 15 the same as 14?

The fairway at fifteen has a lot of movement, so although the hole is similar to fourteen it looks different. The wise play is probably to the 150 yard marker which will leave a good angle over the water into the green.

Is Juniper a good par 4?

Juniper has a good balance of long and short par fours which results in a nice variety of tee shots and approaches. Many of the greens, however, are raised which adds length to the approach.

What is the average slope rating for golf courses?

What does slope number mean in golf?

Thus, the slope number converts a golfer’s handicap into a course handicap. In this way, it is made sure that a bogey golfer is allowed to play at an equal level to a scratch golfer, and it helps them obtain enough strokes from the same set of tees. This is the mathematical formula of how it is derived:

How many strokes does a par 72 golf course have?

It is expressed in strokes, so an easy par-72 golf course could have a 68.9 course rating, while the more difficult one is likely to have a rating of 74.5. In other words, an average golfer should expect to play 68.9 strokes when the course playing difficulty is rated ‘easy,’ while on a challenging course, the same golfer is expected ...

When did the slope rating start?

USGA introduced the slope rating measurement in the 1980s as a system of fairness directed to bogey players. Namely, they observed that a bogey golfer is likely to increase the number of strokes considerably more when playing on a course with a higher level of difficulty than a scratch golfer. This led to creating a slope handicap system ...

Do golf courses affect the slope number?

Yes, they do. However, the course rating impacts the golfer’s index considerably more than the slope number. It often happens that players become too focused on the slope number while ignoring the golf course number.
