How do you tighten the Turbo ports on a GTI?

If you can, reach beneath the turbo and thread on the lower ones, too. Otherwise, thread them on from underneath the GTI. Use a 12mm socket to tighten the nuts and torque them to 25Nm. Remove the plastic caps from the ports as you reinstall the proper lines.

What turbo does MK8 GTI have?

Garrett turbocharger unitThe MK8 GTI uses the well-proven formula of FWD with a 2.0T 4-cylinder engine, but with a new Garrett turbocharger unit. Could this new turbocharger unit mean more potential from ECU calibration? It will be interesting to see the results compared to previous models.

Does the GTI have a twin scroll turbo?

The turbos are not twin scroll. There is a divider in the beginning of the exhaust housing which helps with the pulsing of the cylinders due to no manifold but it only goes in a few cm's and then it becomes a common housing. This applies to the R and GTI turbo.

How big is an IS38 turbo?

The IS38 features a 45.2mm / 58.0mm compressor wheel and a 47.4mm / 54.7mm turbine wheel. After installing the new Turbo Inlet on the IS38, we took note of the turbo's connector positions and proceeded to mount and install it.

Measurements

To evaluate boost onset a measurement can be made to compare how the turbocharger performs when paired with different components. The measurement that will be used for making comparisons will consist of the time that it takes for boost pressure to build from one pound per square inch (1 psi) to twenty psi (20 psi).

Reasoning

The development of boost pressure is closely related to the ability of the engine to develop torque, which the driver senses by the vehicle’s acceleration. The driver perceives acceleration as time passes, and boost building within a short time passage can be described as responsive.

Chart Explained

The first chart above shows that with the IS20 turbocharger as engine speed increases the amount of time needed for boost pressure to build from one psi to twenty psi decreases. It also shows that the decrease in time becomes smaller for an equivalent increase in engine speed the higher the engine speed becomes.

Where is the TIP on a Mk7?

The TIP is a component located along the Mk7 GTI/R engine intake and connects the airbox to the turbocharger allowing filtered air to enter the turbocharger compressor housing. All test items that are part of this program are built to function at a minimum with the IS20 or IS38 style compressor housing and stock size inlet hoses. None of the test items have been modified from how they were delivered from the vendor.

How much airflow does a MQB have?

In operation it is expected that the MQB will generate intake airflow that ranges from 10 CFM up to 600 CFM (redline at 27 psi of manifold boost pressure). The maximum airflow capacity of the PTS flowbench is approximately 600 CFM at 28”.

What temperature is used for a Mk7 GTI?

The vehicle will be operated with ambient temperature ranging between mid 70’s to mid 90’s.

What is a turbocharger blanket?

The turbocharger blanket as the name suggests is a product that encases the turbocharger to reduce heat transfer from the turbo. The blanket is wrapped around the turbine housing, the source of the greatest heat in the turbocharger. The blanket is made of a high heat resistant material.

I have it on good authority that all future EA888 engines will be IHI blown.

Fair enough thank you both for the informative responses, I just presumed the all encompassing vag group would keep it all in house

I honestly don't think a turbo built by a car manufacturer would be all that good lol. Why reinvent the wheel? Borg Warner and co have been at it for many moons and have got it pretty much bang on. I reckon the K04 on our car is one of the best OEM turbochargers available.

Description of Equipment

Scope of Test

Image
This project was started to evaluate the performance of a selection of Turbocharger Inlet Pipe (TIP) products. Presently the only known source of performance data for some of these products is manufacturer supplied data and user accounts that typically consist of perceived performance changes.
