The PGA Tour is a for-profit corporation that has an invested interest in promoting their tournaments. Many Tour events have their winning score be 10-under to 18-under par. A Major tournament is often won with a score nearer to par. It takes a lot of resources to setup for a Major in the sense the greens are mowed to have shorter grass, and so the members of the host club are not usually allowed to play as much on their own course. The "rough" is grown longer, which requires more fertilizer and water and maintenance. A Tour event will do similar things to make their site be in great shape for the tournament, but a Major just amplifies each of these things so that the course plays "faster, longer, and harder". There's also the element of pressure; a player wants to go down in history; that is done by winning a Major.. and so even the greatest players will let their nerves affect their play at a Major.... ten times more so than a Tour event, in general
