Get Your Golfers Into the Weekend
Today we look at why it's so important to pick golfers that make the cut, whether that be the typical 36-hole cut or the odd 54-hole cut. In any other sport your players are guaranteed to be part of full games unless of course, they are ejected, or get injured.
Construct Multiple Lineups
With only 36 holes that a player is guaranteed to play outside of a withdrawal happening, there are only 36 opportunities to earn fantasy points, up to a maximum of 72 holes and 72 opportunities to tally up those valuable fantasy points.
Cash Games vs GPPs
I tend to balance my lineups out for cash games with golfers in the salary range of $7,500 to $9,000, and when it comes to GPPs I get more aggressive where I have two or three golfers in the $9,500 to $11,500 range and then go after value picks where the players have high odds to make the cut, but will likely only finish in the 30's at best unless their tournament is an anomaly and go off for a top 10 finish which is always a big plus for DFS users..
Holes Lost Stats
Taking a look at percentages of holes lost when it comes to players missing the cut looks like this - 5 out of 6 golfers making the cut means losing 36 holes out of 432 holes total or 8.3%, 4 out of 6 golfers making the cut means losing 72 holes out of 432 holes total or 16.6%, 3 out of 6 golfers represents losing out on 25% of holes, 2 out of 6 golfers means 33.3% of holes are lost, and if you only get one golfer into the weekend your lineup loses 41.6% of holes.
Spread Your Bets Around
While it's frustrating to have lineups that all look like losers heading into the weekend, more recently, DFS sites now allow their users to hedge their bets by entering fresh lineups for the weekend rounds where cuts don't matter anymore.
How many holes should you go in fantasy golf?
those who tend to miss the cut – should be avoided. You need golfers on your team who will go the entire 72 holes. The more rounds they play, the more fantasy points they’ll earn.
How many points do you get if you finish first in golf?
Think of it this way: you’ll earn 30 points if one of your golfers finishes first. That’s a major accomplishment. But the number of points you’ll earn from a first-place finish is less than you’ll earn from just 2 eagles and 2 birdies. While conservative golfers might win tournaments, the risk-takers are the ones who tend to deliver the most fantasy points.
Why are putts ignored in fantasy golf?
Most folks focus on driving accuracy, driving distance, GIR and birdie average, forgetting that a poor putting game can ruin a great tee-to-green round.
What does scrambling percentage mean?
Scrambling percentage reflects how often a player makes par or better despite missing greens in regulation. A golfer who ranks highly in this category might have a killer chipping or putting game that makes up for a lackluster tee-to-green. In other words, his short game helps him to avoid a bogey (or worse).
How many putts are needed for a par hole?
Par for each hole includes 2 putts. That being the case, a golfer needs to do the following to achieve a green in regulation:
What does bounce back percentage mean?
A player’s bounce back percentage shows how often he scores under par right after hitting a bogey (1 stroke over par). A high percentage indicates he’s unlikely to be encumbered by poor rounds. He’s able to “bounce back” rather than letting his mistakes adversely affect his performance.
What happens if you hit a bogey in golf?
If one of your players hits a bogey, you’ll only lose half a point. That’s not a huge penalty. Meanwhile, if he scores a birdie or eagle, you’ll earn 3 or 8 points, respectively. Can you see how your team might benefit from golfers who are willing to take risks?
What is the most important day of the week in fantasy golf?
Obviously, players who don’t play on the weekend aren’t going to accumulate points for your rosters! This is why many people consider Friday to be the most important day of the tournament, in addition to the final round on Sunday. If you get all your golfers through to the final two rounds, you are likely sitting pretty in your contests for the week. Some smaller field tournaments do not feature a cut after the second round, but the above parameters are what you will be working with about 90% of the time.
How many rounds are there in a golf tournament?
Golf tournaments are generally played over four rounds, with the first round on Thursday and the final round on Sunday. Most tournaments have somewhere between 132 and 156 golfers, and there is a “cut” that takes place after two rounds. That reduces the field to the top 65 golfers (plus ties), and only those golfers play the weekend rounds. If more than 78 golfers are included in the top 65 plus ties, there is another cut after the third round in order to get the field closer to 65.
What is current form in golf?
You will hear these buzzwords often in DFS golf, and it is sort of akin to the “BvP” debate in baseball. Golf is very much a mental game, so current form is a factor you need to consider. If a guy has put up a top ten finish in three straight tournaments, he’s probably got something good working for him. Conversely, if a guy has missed five straight cuts, he’s probably trying to work things out. That is the “current form” part of the debate, and most people agree that it is important. The “course history” piece is more polarizing. However, there are certain guys that just tend to do better on certain tracks. If a guy has played a tournament 15 times without ever missing a cut, it’s safe to say that he likes playing on that course. As a recreational golfer myself (albeit a terrible one), there are just some courses that I like playing better than others. A professional golfer is no different.
Is golf a sport in DFS?
Golf may not be a sport that you HAVE to watch in order to succeed in DFS, but it certainly helps. Simply watching one round of golf on television will allow you to see shots from maybe 20 different golfers. You will quickly learn who the bigger hitters are, who the better players are, and the nuances of the game will come to you quickly. There is something to be said about this approach, and it helped me enjoy watching golf on television. Yes, it’s more exciting than most people make it out to be (I will admit there is plenty of opinion in that statement).
Is golf a fantasy game?
Golf can be a rewarding daily fantasy game, but go into it knowing that it can also be a tough grind. Variance is largely inherent in the sport, and I liken it to baseball in that realm. The better players will come out as long-term winners, but it can be frustrating from week to week.
Is fantasy golf a good sport?
It makes all the sense in the world (okay, maybe not that much sense, but it makes sense). Daily fantasy golf is one of the best “sweats” out there, and the fact that the contests run for over half a week makes that even more fun.
Is it better to have more golfers on one set of tee times?
If there’s a weather pattern that sets up to where it will be extra windy for one set of tee times, it is often advantageous to set your lineup with more golfers from the favorable side of the weather draw. If you think this is something that I am overreacting to, just ask plenty of people who have won GPP s (myself included) because they came out ahead in the weather department. It doesn’t always make a difference, but there are two to three times a year where it can be a real key.
