Yesterday, I went "under cover" as a golfer who hasn't played steady golf in 8 years due to getting married, having kids, ect. I went to the PGA superstore and a Golf Galaxy for a fitting to see how they fit me and the differences between the two stores. The locations will remain anonymous just in case....
Nessism
Nice writeup. Good to hear you are on to the "strong loft" trick. Would encourage you to select the clubs that inspire the most confidence, and those you hit the best.

yup ill be heading back to GG when the new titleist and Pings drop this season......gotta see the S55's. If they do not fit me well, the AP2's with the PX95 shaft 6.0's are mine!!!

Well, your experiment runs true to the last few time I had a chance to visit a PGA Superstore. I seems like they are taking the Home Depot customer service approach to the golf industry. I know it might be unfair to assume, but I was in 3 locations in 2 different states looking for some items and received just what you described for service levels.

I have also had a terrible "Fitting" at PGA superstore. Lets just say they guy was kept handing me clubs with R flex shafts even though I have a 110mph Club speed. Lol. He knew absolutley nothing about fitting someone for golf clubs. The store is awesome though. I just wouldnt take any of the "Fitters" advice.

I just had my first iron fitting a couple weeks ago. Guy was super nice -- after the first session of about 30 minutes hitting different irons and finding my lie angle, he put together a Ping i20 and had me take it home and play with it for a couple of days. Is this not normal?
Dizz
Hopefully this doesn't come off as rude so I'm gonna do my best to explain things about the golf industry.

Seeing as I have never had a fitting and my driver is seemingly producing unreal spin rates, I decided to go to Golf Galaxy and go get fitted for a new driver shaft.
Nemicu
Interesting they had so many left handed demos in store. But then again, the rest of your story is equally far fetched.
David in FL
Interesting. I think a big key for any monitor work is developing a point of reference with a club you know, as you did with your own 8-iron.
TristanBlevins
Some food for thought: did he have you hit the same iron with two different shafts or did he have you hit your irons versus a new iron with a different shaft. If it's the latter, there is likely also a loft discrepancy contributing to the extra distance. Just a couple things to keep in mind while making your decision.
TristanBlevins

TristanBlevins
Just a note here: It will be cheaper to reshaft your irons than buy new ones. You may prefer the new ones, but from a cost standpoint it is cheaper to reshaft them since you're only paying for the shaft instead of an entire club.
Hardballs
When I bought my irons the guy in shop suggested we should all change clubs every 3 years! To keep up with technology, and to make sure they're fitted to evolving swings!
