To increase wheel diameter but keep overall tire height the same, any size offered as a factory option on a MkV, MkVI or MkVII Golf will work. For some reference, the same height in 17" is 225/45-17. The same height in 18" is 225/40-18. Both of those are factory VW sizes.

The two-digit number after the slash mark in a tire size is the aspect ratio. For example, in a size P215/65 R15 tire, the 65 means that the height is equal to 65% of the tire's width. The bigger the aspect ratio, the bigger the tire's sidewall will be.

I have a 2017 Wolfsburg edition Golf. Tires are 205/55/16. The car rides very nicely. The Golf R I rest drove had 235/35/19 tires. The Wolfsburg ride is much more forgiving. I only use my car for bopping around. Never drive it hard. Would 205/55/16 wheels & tires be compatible with a Golf R?

I don't think 16" wheels would have enough clearance for the front calipers (but I could be wrong, and if anyone knows for sure please comment).

mustard

I am sure that 17" will fit over the calipers, but you need to be aware of the spoke design which may require spacers to clear.

MassMassa

Mine is currently fitted with 17" winter wheels - they just about clear the front calipers.

JohnRRR

As above, 17'' is the smallest size but be careful with offsets if you're looking into aftermarket wheels.

JoeGTI7

17’s will fit. Brakes are the same as those on a GTI PP and those come on 17’s in some markets.

NeilM

Some 17" wheels will just fit, others not quite; 16's do not fit at all. Depends on the specific wheel design. I'd suggest that, other than for use with snow tires, 17" wheels don't really suit the R's character, and a 205 section width simply isn't enough for the car.
