This is how it works: What the Golf? looks like a standard golf game, and it’s played in the expected way. You point your arrow where you’d like the ball to go, you hold a button to select the strength with which you hit the ball, and the ball flies or rolls toward the hole.

What is What the Golf?
Technically speaking, What the Golf (WTG) is a golf game. You aim an arrow with the left joystick and shoot by pressing A, the longer you press A the harder the shot. As you’d expect, your aim is to hit the hole or flag at the end of a course. That’s golf, right?
The Courses
The ten levels you play through are navigated via an over world. Here you can have some fun smashing up furniture and practice trick shots. You enter each course by putting the ball into one of the countless holes in the over world. Each course has three stages. The first course on each hole you have to complete to progress to the next course.
The comedy is in the timing
WTG’s unique selling point is its comedy. I lost count at the amount of times I laughed out loud whilst playing. I love that every time you play a new course, the game lulls you into a false sense of security. For example, you may play one hole where you hit a golf ball across the course.
Art and Music
When you beat the game you get a message from the developers saying that they were just a small team and that ‘everyone did a bit of everything’ on the project. This is most obvious with the game’s sound track, which is mostly just the developers singing ‘what the golf’ to a variety of different tunes.
A Hole in One

What the Golf, 2019's hilarious anti-golf golf game, is at its best on Switch. Who played What the Golf on iPhone?
James O'Connor. James O'Connor had already played through What the Golf on iPhone (and halfway through again on PC), but diving deep into the campaign again on Switch was a pleasure--although he probably racked up more time playing Party Mode over and over again.
Is What the Golf on PC or Switch?
What the Golf was already excellent on PC and mobile, but the Switch version is the definitive one, especially if you have another player handy. It's still wildly funny, weird, and lots of fun, and if it was just the campaign again, it would still be the best version of the game thanks to the ability to switch between touch and stick controls--but the addition of Party Mode really elevates the whole package. In my original review I said, "Like all great jokes, you'll want to share it," and now that's easier than ever.
Can you play Switch games with controllers?
The single-player campaign is essentially unchanged from previous versions, at least in terms of levels and layouts, but playing on Switch gives you some extra control options and a few bells and whistles. Players now have the option to use either a controller or the touchscreen, and if you're playing in handheld mode you can switch seamlessly at any time. You can play through the full game docked, but a few levels that use first-person motion controls will prompt you with a recommendation that you switch to handheld for the best experience--these are also the only levels that require you to have the Joy-Cons connected. I found that I preferred a docked experience for party mode and undocked for the campaign.
