The Long Haul
Given how popular the Golf became as a road-tripper right off the bat, we didn’t so much marry the VW as elope. By the end of its stay, the Golf had traveled from our Ann Arbor, Michigan, headquarters to Chicago, Wisconsin, New York, Massachusetts, Virginia (twice), Ohio (many times), and even circled Lake Michigan once for giggles.
The Daily Grind
As the miles piled on, we did find some chinks in the Golf’s armor. Like finding out your spouse snores or always leaves dishes in the sink, the VW’s most glaring issues weren’t deal-killers, merely annoyances. The automatic transmission became a sore point for its lazy moves and low-speed stumbles.
The Mechanical Stuff
Mechanically, the Golf proved largely trouble-free through 40,000 miles, although service costs for scheduled maintenance were high. Between the 20,000-mile, 30,000-mile, and 40,000-mile services, we spent $998, getting in return only oil changes, rotated tires, inspections, and engine and cabin air filters.
More Doors, More SEL, More Automatic!
The 2015 Golf lineup consists of two body styles (two- and four-door hatchbacks), two engines (a gas turbo four and a TDI diesel ), and two transmission choices (a five-speed manual and a six-speed automatic).
Light on Fuel, Big on Praise
Early impressions have been positive, as you might expect. Pretty much every editor who has wrapped his or her hands around the Golf’s padded, leather-wrapped steering-wheel rim has come away impressed by the car’s stiff structure, comfortable ride, and sure handling.
What is the interior of a 2015 Volkswagen Golf?
The 2015 Volkswagen Golf's interior features well-grained materials that are soft to the touch and a cabin design that is, while somewhat austere, comfortable and even sporty, thanks to bold red stitching. Buttons and switches are placed close to the driver and offer intuitive, simple control. The 5.8-inch touchscreen is a tad small compared to others, but it works well and is easily read at a glance. But the large iPhone connector plug can require you to remove the phone's case and remains a critical gripe, especially with the ubiquity of simple USB ports. The navigation system also disappoints with its inability to overlay traffic information on the map. Instead, it lists traffic incidents in the vicinity.

What is the intercooler on a GTI?
The Front Mount Intercooler plays a critical role in the performance of your 2.0 TSI engine – it keeps the incoming air cool, making sure your GTI’s charge air temp stays cool and rich in o2, thereby making maximum power. The cooler the incoming air charge is, the denser it is, and the more dense the air is, the more oxygen-rich it is. The more oxygen-rich the air charge is, the better the fuel burns, resulting in optimal power output and a happy engine. On the other hand, if the intercooler gets overwhelmed (which can happen on 2.0 TSI models, unfortunately), the intercooler can’t keep up and will no longer cool the air at the same rate the air is coming in. What happens then is the motor gets fed a hot air charge, resulting in the motor feeling sluggish and gutless and running hot isn’t good for any engine.
