Does the ball hit the ground first when it rolls into water?
Even though the ball flew over the water and landed on ground first before rolling back into water. It really depends on what type of water hazard your ball rolled into. Lateral water hazards run down the golf course (think tee to green water, like a stream or river).
What happens if you hit a golf ball over the water?
In one case in particular you might find yourself getting ready to hit your next golf shot over water. After hitting the golf shot over the water successfully, it lands on the green or the grass short of the green which happens to slope down towards the water, sending your ball rolling backwards into a water hazard.
What happens if you find your golf ball in the hazard?
In either case, if you find your ball, you always have the option to play the ball as it lies from within the hazard at no penalty. Bear in mind that from within the hazard, you are not permitted to rest your club on the ground when addressing the ball.
How close to the hole can you drop a golf ball?
Or you can also find a point equidistant from the hole on the opposite margin of the hazard from where the ball last crossed into the hazard. But it cannot be dropped nearer to the hole. Or you can play from as near as possible to the spot that the original golf shot was last played (Rule 26-1a).
What is a mulligan in golf?
The basic definition of mulligan, a term most associated with golf, is a "do-over," a second try after your first has gone awry. Every weekend golfer has taken a few mulligans in their lifetime, and there's no shame in that.
What happens if a golf ball goes in the hole and bounces out?
According to the USGA Rules, when a golf ball bounces out of the hole, it is not considered a 'holed ball'. The ball must be played from where it came to a full stop after bouncing out of the hole.
What is a flyer lie golf?
Traditional golf instruction tells you that when your ball is sitting in light rough, you have what's called a 'flyer' lie. At impact the grass will come between your clubface and ball, producing a shot with little backspin - sort of a knuckleball.
Why do golfers stab the green?
A ball mark is a little depression or crater in the grass left by a golf ball when it lands on the green from a tee shot or approach shot. They're formed usually by an extremely high or hard-hit shot in which the golf ball reaches enough velocity and direct impact to leave a golfball-sized dent on the putting surface.
Why do pro golfers leave the pin in when putting?
Changes brought in the by Royal and Ancient and the USGA, golf's two ruling bodies, amended the rules for 2019. The bodies decided on the alteration because they believe "allowing a player to putt with the flagstick in the hole without fear of penalty should generally help speed up play".
How many golf balls can a player carry in his bag?
nine golf ballsUnder the Rules of Golf, a golfer can carry as many golf balls as they want in their bag. Really, they can carry as many golf balls as they're willing to carry around themselves or their caddie is willing to lug around for them. Most PGA Tour golfers carry in the area of nine golf balls in their bag per round.
What is a hot lie in golf?
In this scenario the ball is perched on top of the longer grass and we're smiling. Be careful though as this is a perfect lie for a flyer. A flyer occurs when the grass does not slow the clubhead down through the hit and just enough of it gets caught between the ball and the face.
What is a jumper lie?
Most golfers love this lie, because they get a little cushion under the ball. The trouble is, the ball tends to jump out of the short rough—hence the name "flyer lie." What makes it jump? Grass gets trapped between the clubface and the ball at impact, so the face can't grip the ball like it normally does.

Can you use a wedge on a putting green?
You can putt with a wedge. Golfers are also allowed to hit any kind of shot they want on the green in the interest of getting the ball closer to the hole. That means a golfer can use a wedge or an iron to chip or pitch their ball closer to the hole, even while on the putting green.
Can you stand behind your partner when he is putting?
When it comes to reading a putt's break, members of a four-ball team may stand nearly anywhere on the green to watch a partner putt, with one exception: They're not allowed to stand on or close to an extension of the player's line of putt behind the ball (Rule 14-2b).
What does intuition do to a ball?
Physical intuition pushes us more and more into the world of non-linearity. A ball that is fully underground will behave very differently to the one that simply slides on the surface. We expect that the forces acting on the ball will depend on the surface area of the ball in contact with the ground.
What are the rules for a golf ball?
There are six rules in the official governance regarding the golf ball [6]: General which states that a ball must be a golf ball in a traditional sense; Weight which specifies the upper limit for ball’s mass; Size which specifies the lower limit for ball’s diameter; Spherical symmetry which requires the ball to behave symmetrically;
Can a ball bounce off a table?
If you have ever tried looking up any analysis of a ball bounce you would have most likely found either simple problems of a rigid ball bouncing off a (rigid) table, or more complicated problems regarding tennis balls, footballs or basketballs. Even if the ball is allowed to deform during the bounce, one common denominator ...
Can a ball bounce backwards?
Without a doubt the ball can bounce backward and change its spin, but at the same time it can still be in contact with the surface while slipping only. Mathematically, this is a very simple initial value ODE problem. In theory, an analytic result could be obtained, but does not introduce much insight into the work.
Is a golf ball a hard object?
The golf ball is often imagined as a rock-hard object, but it is not quite the case (I encourage you to watch [5]). The ball becomes quite elastic during its contact with the club, but remains approximately rigid as it bounces off the course.
What happens if you can't find your ball?
Regular readers will yawn now, as we return once more to ‘known or virtually certain’. If you can’t find your ball, but it is known or virtually certain it came to rest in or on an abnormal course condition on the course, you can take relief under Rule 16.1e.
What are loose impediments?
Natural materials that are piled for removal are also loose impediments, and the rules further say that ‘any materials left on the course that are not intended to be removed are not ground under repair unless the committee has defined them as such’.
Why do you have to take relief under Rule 16.1b?
You can opt to take relief under Rule 16.1b because ground under repair is classed as an abnormal course condition. You find the nearest point of complete relief and drop in a relief area.
What is the F-14 rule?
It’s F-14, for anyone who wants to look it up, and it also allows you to treat them as ground under repair. But the rule should be limited in use to the hole, or holes, where there are issues.

Out of bounds is out of bounds. What the ball does before is irrelevant.

He is probably confusing it with a water hazard. A water hazard you basically drop at the point of entry, 1 stroke penalty. Essentially it's an Unplayable Lie and treated similarly.

Dormie1360, it seems you have answered my question whilst I was typing it out!

For me on this ruling you have to know for certain it was carried away. Just because the ball isn't found doesn't mean it traveled OB. The ball could be 100 yards down stream next to a rock. To spend time to try to identify all the possible golf balls in the stream is a waste of time.

This is the second time you have made this analogy and unfortunately it is no better the second time. ..........
What is lateral water hazard?
Lateral water hazards run down the golf course (think tee to green water, like a stream or river). These get treated with a two clubs length relief from the point where the ball last crossed the margin of the lateral water hazard.
What happens when you hit a golf shot over the water?
After hitting the golf shot over the water successfully, it lands on the green or the grass short of the green which happens to slope down towards the water, sending your ball rolling backwards into a water hazard.
Can you drop a ball on the green side of the water?
In some cases of the lateral hazards (red stakes / lines) and yellow stake / line hazards, your ball may be able to be dropped on the putting green size of the water hazard. This only happens if it still meets the rule outlines above.
What is the fifth option in a red hazard?
The fifth and final option in a red hazard, is to take a point, equidistant from the point where your ball last crossed into the hazard, but on the opposite side of the hazard, and drop within two club lengths from there. This option is rarely used, but it’s always beneficial for a player to know the rules.
What is a water hazard in golf?
In summary, a water hazard marked with yellow is a standard water hazard. Water marked with red is called a lateral water hazard, and normally runs along the side of a golf hole. The three options you have in both cases are that you can play the ball from where it lies, go back to where you hit your last shot, or take a drop anywhere along ...
What are the rules of golf for water hazards?
Rules of Golf – Water Hazards. When you hit your ball into a water hazard, the first thing to do is to notice whether the hazard is marked with the red stakes for lines, or with yellow stakes or lines.
What is a red line in golf?
Red Stakes/Lines: Lateral Water Hazard. In a red, or lateral hazard, you have 2 additional options available to you. The first, and perhaps the most common, is to take the point where your ball last crossed into the hazard, and drop within two club lengths of this point, no closer to the hole.
What is a yellow stakes line?
Yellow Stakes/Lines: Water Hazard. In either case, if you find your ball, you always have the option to play the ball as it lies from within the hazard at no penalty. Bear in mind that from within the hazard, you are not permitted to rest your club on the ground when addressing the ball.
Can you play the ball from where you found it?
Assuming you can’t play the ball from where you found it, each option from a water hazard comes with a one stroke penalty. In both red and yellow hazards, you also have the option to go back to the point where you played your last shot, and play from there.
What Happens If My Golf Ball Hits Another Golf Ball?
When a different ball is moved by a ball played from off the putting green, there won’t be any specific penalty. However, there’s a penalty of two strokes for any golfer who plays in a strokes play, only to have the ball from the putting green hit another ball on the putting green.
Does The Golf Ball Have To Hit The Bottom Of The Cup?
One of the most important part of scoring in golf where we are most concerned with is “when the ball is holed” In the golf rule book, the very first rule says that getting the ball into the hole is the point of the game. A golfer’s play of a hole is finished once he’s able to play the ball into that hole.
How Long Can You Wait For A Golf Ball To Drop In The Hole?
10 seconds! You can only wait for 10 seconds for your golf ball to drop in the hole. Anything more than that will not count!
How Much Time Is Allowed To Find A Lost Ball When Playing A Hole In Golf?
A golfer is given five minutes to find his golf ball without any penalty after losing sight of the ball. However, he has been put in his mind several rules when searching for the ball. You will not be allowed to spend anything more than five minutes.
What Happens When You Pick Up Your Ball In Golf?
A player will be penalized with a stroke if he lifts his opponent’s ball-marker or possibly causes it to move away.
Closing Chapter
A lot of golfers are wondering when it matters when a golf ball bounces from the gap. Effectively, it can! One stroke obviously is counted whether the golf ball of yours bounces in after which rebel out of the gap. Because it’s rested to the hole’s circumference and gone beneath the amount of the hole’s lip. We’ve come to the end of this blog post.

Sorry you're buddy is right. The putt is not holed if it doesn't stay in the cup. if it makes you feel any better this actually happened to a guy on the last hole of Q School several years back and he missed qualifying by wait for it.....................................yep 1 stroke.

You got screwed. It has happened to me a couple of times as well. Including in a tournament.

So if you hit a house that is OB but the ball hits the roof and makes a huge bounces back onto the course, you would not play that ball as it "was" OB at one part of the ball flight? !!

is the lining being 1" down a pro only thing? if not, im not sure about the rest of you but most courses ive played, the lining is only 1/4 below the surface. if they were an inch, all the hole edges would be torn to shreds from the people who slam the flag stick against the edge while putting the flag back in

Been golfing for over 10 years and this actually happened to me today. You think if they put a 45 degree chamfer on the edge of the plastic cup this would never happen. Kind of weird they do not. It actually makes the ID of the hole smaller which is unfortunate.

Ok... So I thought I would bring a question me and a buddy of mine have.. With two sides of course

Nonsense, I find old threads quite useful and entertaining daily. Now having 14 threads on the same subject...... now that is an issue.
Introduction
Current Literature
- Although not much has been done, some results are available. A starting point is often a simple model for the bounce of a rigid ball against a rigid surface, such as the one described in . This usually assumes a simple Coulomb force acting as a friction between the ball and the surface, and the lift off is determined by a coefficient of restitution...
Simple Approaches at The Modelling of The Compliant Behaviour of The Ground
- One of the simplest way to model visco-elastic properties is by the use of simple springs and dampers. Unsurprisingly, this also is a route we took. We present two simple mechanisms based on the Kelvin-Voigt formulation (where a spring and a damper are connected in parallel) and the Maxwell mechanism (where the spring and the damper are connected in series). For now we shall also make a simple assumption that the ball s…
Experimental Data
- In October 2019 we carried out our first experimental campaign. In this simple setting golf balls were fired from a modified baseball canon and bounced off a plank of wood with a layer of artificial grass on top of it. We selected 55 initial conditions, ranging over different speeds, spins and incline angles. Each choice of initial condition has been repeated 6 times and the bounces were recorded using a high-speed camera (at 10,000 frames per second…
So Where Is It All Heading?
- And so one cannot finish the consideration of the topic now without a general wonder — where is it all leading us?The work is clearly incomplete — we still lack a model that would explain all the phenomena and match the data. But our intuition and the experimental results don’t give a clear answer as to where we will go next. Physical intuition pushes us more and more into the world of non-linearity. A ball that is fully underground will behave ver…
