Right before you begin your backswing, perform a subtle forward press that brings the club's grip more in line with your front leg. This will give your backswing a trigger instead of just yanking the club up from the ground. The best image to think about is starting to swing a bucket full of water.Apr 6, 2017

forward press

your video has your shaft with a forward lean about 4 or 5 degrees. It's possible to start the club at 0 lean and press the hands only to the 5 degree level as the key to start the swing. The press can be a subtle move and not include the whole body, knees , etc.

Shank!

Shankapotomus, Long time buddy. Hope you're well. As others have commented (ie.Neil) some type of movement as a trigger is common and helps many. I don't forward press but do my share of waggling and wiggling particularly as I set up.

Press

I agree and thanks. Good to be back. Two ankle replacements on the same ankle has been an eight month challenge. Prevented me from loading right till a few weeks ago. I'm shortening my pre shot stuff and incorporating some Dufner waggle. I use a press on putts but its a hands move only and slight.

Wrist action

In addition to what Robert M said, I'd add that the problem is that this sort of motion with the hands tends to get you into violating rule 1, the best wrist action is no wrist action.

press

I'm not saying I have this issue. I have a waggle that settles into a 4 degree forward lean at address. It's pretty static. Verified by Skypro. What I was proposing was on Surges video, he waggles and sets to a 4 or 5 degree lean. This is almost a press. He then keeps his wrist locked. OK, I'm a believer in no or almost no conscience wrist action.

The Press

Surge, Lots of good points you made, but every one needs an action of some sort to start, even Harvey Pennick recommended an action of some sort as he said the brain finds it difficult to start from zero and you admitted that you squeeze down on your knees a millisecond prior to the lift.

Press into the ground

I can't press into the ground before I swing because it sets where the bottom of my arc is going to be - behind and below the ball. Can you spell FAT!!!!! I only lower the club to where the leading edge is just below the center of the ball.

Feedback

I was just wondering why no one forward presses the driver anymore? Well, at least not at the professional level. What are the pros and cons of the forward press in the full swing? Firstly though, I think it's a fallacy that forward pressing at address delofts the club at impact. After all, set up and impact are two totally different positions.

Feedback

forward press is to prevent overactive wrist movement in the takeaway, nothing to do with impact position. with driver, club sits flatter and ball is typically positioned more forward, so people rarely pick up the club immediately in the takeaway with their wrists,

Feedback

Today I notice by not forward pressing driver my shots were nice draw. And when I did forward press were low and hook

I have been using a forward press at address lately for all clubs including driver.

Blakester

Funny you mention this, as I typically do the same thing.

dogsbe

I chuck in a slight forward press to smooth out the back swing. It is kinda like getting the ball rolling.

SketchyBFC

I get much better results when I press forward at address and concentrate on keeping my hands forward in the latter part of the downswing. I know by doing this that I can have a much more controlled and relaxed swing, but still get good clubhead speed with a strong release.

Jarri

It's a quick fix for those who have difficulty finding forward shaft lean at impact...

RRFireblade

So far no one has stated how big or little thier press is. Funny how easy it is to assume the worst without all the facts and offer full diagnosis. The internet rocks.

ahopkins13

I had a forward press most the golf season but when i fell apart and took a couple lessons it was recommended to me to get rid of it. Which i have as well as make a few other changes.
