What to wear to play golf when it's cold?

Under Armour ColdGear base layer
I have had a white UA compression shirt for more than a decade and it is still as effective as when I first wore it. It's so tight that it can take a little effort to put on and take off, but it's so stretchy that it has no adverse effect on my swing.
Galvin Green Drake pullover
This Swedish brand is primarily known for its best-in-class rain gear, but I sing the praises of their Drake pullover ($129, 8 colors) to any shivering golfer who'll listen.
Galway Bay golf pants
This Michigan-based brand makes good rain jackets as well, but I'm most impressed by their pants, which they appropriately designate as "All-Weather" rather than just for rain. If temperatures are going to be below 50, I'll just wear them instead of a pair of golf khakis or chinos, especially if it's going to be breezy.
HotHands
Available in big-box, sporting goods stores and online for less than $10 per pack of 10 (five packs of two each), HotHands are air-activated and will stay as warm as 135 degrees for up to 10 hours, meaning you could even squeeze in 36 holes with one pair, especially since cold weather usually means fast rounds since it tends to chase golfers away.
FootJoy RainGrip Gloves
Even if it's not wet out, these are a must for any golfer, either as a backup when your main glove fails or to provide a bit of extra comfort if it's bone-chilling cold outside. Their utility in the rain needs no introduction - they're the best ($23).
It's hard to find a white golf ball in the snow
Some golfers make a distinction between when it’s too cold to play golf and when it’s too cold to play well. Resolute players can be found on the green even if it’s below 45 degrees and raining, but the weather conditions can take a toll on your performance. First and foremost, consider your safety.
Play golf this winter
A true golfer cannot go the whole winter without playing golf and you do not want to practice golf at home, nor subject yourself to the harsh weather. Believe it or not, there is a place where you can golf all year with minimal interruption from the winter weather.
What are the factors that determine golfing in cold weather?
There are two deciding factors for golfing in cold weather. They are simple and easy to judge. The first is rain. Even if it is sprinkling, that is enough for me to stay home and write an article from my blog. Being wet in the cold is a no go for me. The second is wind. If the wind is anything more than a breeze, I really contemplate hitting the links. The front nine of our course is wide open like a links track so the wind cuts through me like a knife. A mixture of wind and cold is not fun for any golfer.
Is October a hit and miss month for golf?
In my neck of the woods, October is a hit and miss month for playing golf. For example, last Sunday was our closing tournament. Unfortunately, it was so cold, I only lasted 10 holes. I could not handle it anymore. Of course, my weakened state had something to do with it, but even my friends were very uncomfortable.
Do people put their clubs away?
First, it appears that most people do not put their clubs away at all. I would suggest that they live in warmer climes and do not see snow except on TV.
What happens to clubs in the cold?
As for what happens to clubs in the cold (sub zero) - some epoxies will become brittle and there is better chance of the head coming off. This is super rare and is more likely to happen because the club build had an issue already (bad mix, cheap epoxy or the shaft wasn't prepared properly) and the cold made it more likely to make failure to happen. But we are talking very rare as I have play in a winter group for the last two years and have only seen/heard of it once.
Does cold weather hurt golf clubs?
I don't think colder weather will hurt a club by it self . What I think might damage a club in colder weather is if the ground is frozen, and the golfer is taking divots. That might be the equivalent of hitting concrete in some instances.
Can you get stiffer in the cold?
The other thing is you shafts get stiffer in the cold. Not a big deal on its own, but you won't be as loose in the cold , and have more clothes on, so your swing slows down making your shaft way too stiff. I know lots of guy go to light flex for the winter.
Is temp a factor in Augusta?
If the course is Augusta, the temp is not a factor. The only factor would be am I breathing.

I like to try and play all year round, but you have to keep the mindset of that the cold days are just to keep the swing intact and you cant expect much. When the balls run on the green and never stop, and when the tee boxes are too frozen to get a tee in it is getting there lol.
OspreyCI
Played Friday morning in NM and it was 19 degrees when I teed off. Had a foursome also...It was awesome, still playing golf! Used Srixon Z Star Yellow and worked great.
DoNDoN
The temperature is never the factor for me. It is always the wind that is the killer.

if the ground is too hard so you cant take a divot, or greens so frozen ball bounces right off the back -- i'm out
ctgolfnut66
As long as it's not windy, I'll play in anything. This weekend it was 40 with about 30 mph wind gusts and that was a bit too much. I've played when it's in the 20's, and as long as I have a beanie and some hand warmers for the pockets, I'm good to go!

Generally give it up when there it gets so cold that the greens and water hazards freeze, and you can't tell the difference between hitting a shot onto the green, onto the cart path, or onto (not into) water hazard.

played yest in ontario.. 4* first 3 and last 3 holes.. got up to 7* for the others..

What happens when the golf ball is cold?
AKA, when it’s cold, you won’t be able to turn as far, or swing as hard, which means your swing speed will drop and you’ll hit the ball shorter accordingly. This is especially true early in the round, when you’re not warmed up from all the walking and swinging.
Why does my golf swing drop in cold weather?
Luke Kerr-Dineen (2.5 handicap): Lots of golfers think cold weather will cause the ball to fly shorter, and while that’s true, the biggest reason why you lose distance in cold weather is because of the weather’s effect on your body. AKA, when it’s cold, you won’t be able to turn as far, or swing as hard, which means your swing speed will drop ...
Is it colder to ride a golf cart in winter?
Also, walk, don’t ride. There’s nowhere colder than an open-air golf cart on a windy winter day. Finally, ditch your pride. Cold-weather golf is all about scoring — if that means taking two extra clubs and keeping your swing simple and elemental, that’s just fine.
How does cold affect golf?
Cold air is denser than warm air and creates additional drag on a ball. According to the people at Trackman, the difference is approximately one yard of carry for every 10-degree change in temperature. So theoretically, you’re looking at a loss of four yards if you’re playing in 40 degrees as opposed to 80 degrees. Other factors—such as how the body reacts to the cold—can further impact distance. The takeaway: When playing fall or winter golf plan for at least an extra half club, and if your swing is restricted by being fully bundled up, it might even be a full club.
What to wear in the summer to keep out the cold?
Like your mother told you when you were young, it’s all about layering. A turtleneck-like polyester base layer designed to keep out the cold is a must, topped by loose fitting shirts or pullovers. Finally a moisture-wicking shirt or jacket of some kind is preferable. On bottom, typical long pants covered by rain paints will keep the cold at bay while also allowing for easy removal if things heat up.
What is better for golf: wool or baseball?
A wool ski cap is preferred over a baseball cap (have to keep those ears warm and since heat escapes from the head, this type of headwear is preferable). On the hands winter gloves designed especially for golf or, at worse, rain gloves, will provide a slightly better grip and more warmth than a standard golf glove. Plus, they come in pairs.
Can you warm up golf balls?
Warming up golf balls beforehand is not prohibited, but there is a reason for that—it doesn’t work. Several years ago, Golf Laboratories performed a test that showed you could not get a ball warm enough to have any impact because the ball almost instantly adopts to the outside temperatures.
Does alcohol lower your temperature?
OK, we've all seen the fans at NFL games getting all fired up by a few pops while tailgating and then seemingly being impervious to the cold, bare chests and all. Forget it. While alcohol might seem like it would warm you (and a lovely Irish coffee or Bailey's and coffee on a cold day just seems like such a great idea), fact is that drinking will lower your body temperature. I could dive into it, but this article provides pretty damning evidence against bringing a thermos filled with Stingers, or anything else, for that matter. http://mentalfloss.com/article/32256/does-drinking-alcohol-really-keep-you-warm-when-its-cold-out
