When should I shift my diesel turbo?
If you want to shift fuel efficiently you shift in smaller turbo engines to drop in the next gear to about 1500rpm. As different cars have different gear ratios it is very difficult to be specific. Very large turbo Diesel tick over at 200rpm and peak at 1200 to 1500 rpm these would be shifted much earler.
At what RPM should you shift gears?

If you are stopping, you don't change down gears at all - brake down, clutch down, when you stop handbrake on, first gear and ready to go again. If you are just reducing your speed, for example to slow from 40 to 20 because of parked cars, then you can stay in the highest gear possible until you need more power.
