What are the courses at Crystal Mountain Resort?
Crystal Mountain Resort boasts two 18-hole championship golf courses, Mountain Ridge and Betsie Valley. Both are classic examples of northern Michigan golf, sprawling across hills and valleys and through mature forests, but they each offer a different set of challenges. Mountain Ridge was added after the original Betsie Valley Course. Carved from a mountainside, the golf course covers a range of elevation changes from subtle to dramatic. The undulating terrain provides not only several challenges, but also scenic respite with panoramic views of the surroundings forests and hills. The layout is tucked away amongst towering pines, which frame the fairways and greens. Accuracy is immensely important on this course, as is a good strategy for each hole. The occasional water hazard comes into play and there are strategically placed bunkers lurking throughout.

Is Mountain Ridge a good golf course in Michigan?
Mountain Ridge is one of my favorites in Michigan. Each hole is different and keeps you guessing, unlike some other resort courses. As you near the end of your round, you take the cart path up the mountain and are met with the best three finishing holes in the area. You can sometimes get stuck behind groups of people (it is a resort, after all), but don't let that stop you from coming. This is a wonderful course and I would definitely recommend playing it.
Where is Mountain Ridge Country Club?
That is certainly the case with the Mountain Ridge Country Club, which is located in this suburban town some 20 miles west of midtown Manhattan. The centerpiece of the century-old retreat, which will be showcased this week at the Cognizant Founders Cup on the LPGA Tour, is a Donald Ross course that is routed across rolling terrain and features wide fairways; greens with subtle ledges, ridges and tilts; and well-placed bunkers, some of which jut into the fairways at angles. Several of the holes harken back to Old World classics like the seventh with its Punchbowl green and No. 11, where the putting surface has a bit of Biarritz to it. A creek cuts through part of the property, which is replete with specimen maples and oaks, and ponds come into play on a couple of holes. For those golfers looking to warm up before rounds or work on their games, there is a spacious practice ground between the first and 10th holes.
Who designed the second nine golf course?
In the winter of 1916-17, A.W. Tillinghast fashioned a second nine on the property. But it soon became apparent that the site the members had chosen for their club was not well suited for golf. The club turned first to Seth Raynor and Charles Banks and later Walter Travis for advice on how to rectify that problem. But those designers doubted that any amount of money could produce even an adequate course there.

How many par 3 holes are there at Mountain Ridge?
The four par-3 holes at Mountain Ridge are a quality quartet. The 4th seems rather straightforward but the green is truly mindboggling. Being in the wrong position on one’s approach will mean a very quick three-putt. The short, but uphill 7th gained in a big-time way with a new green being created. Now, there are multiple pin positions. On the inward half the par-3 14th and 16th holes are both good but a bit less so in term of the shotmaking challenges when held against the likes of the two on the outward side.
What are the weaknesses of Mountain Ridge?
The main weakness of Mountain Ridge comes from similar type holes at both the par-4 1st and 10th holes. They each run parallel to one another with the practice facility separating them. Each play downhill and are fairly close to the same yardage. While they are not complete clone of one another, the need for meaningful diversity is limited. The same thing happens with the 2nd and 11th holes. In this case — the holes go in the same direction – north to south — and feature a blind landing area. While not of exactly the same yardage — the diversity dimension is limited.

The 18th hole at MRCC is a beast. A 432-yard uphill par-4 that sweeps left to right toward the club’s massive fieldstone clubhouse. A signature hole if there ever was one, and a hole I was able to par, despite leaving myself a 205-yard approach from a patch of gravel left of the fairway.
