Is Portrush a good golf course?

An amazing experience and more deserving of a Top 20 ranking than several courses such as Pebble and Portrush in my view. The holes have great variation and it has the feel of a special place to golf. Not a single hole is just 'good'. They are all excellent and the views are excellent even now (I understand pre-construction of a necessary beach wall, they were even better). A reasonable train ride out from London and a great place to play, stay and then play again.#N#May 21, 2020

Environmental awareness

Royal St George's is situated on the same stretch of coastline as Royal Cinque Ports Club and neighbouring Prince's Golf Club, both former Open Championship venues.

The Open Championship

Royal St George's has hosted The Open Championship on 15 occasions since 1894.

HOLES 1-6

Royal St George’s opening hole is one of several on the course that has retained its original design from 1887. A challenging par 4 begins with a drive over a deep swale known as ‘the Kitchen’.

HOLES 7-12

One of only two par-5s at Royal St George’s, the ‘Strath’ provides a welcome opportunity to improve your score. Plenty of eagles have been recorded at the seventh in previous Opens, with eventual Champion Darren Clarke and Phil Mickelson each making threes in the final round 10 years ago. The hole is not without its challenges, though.

HOLES 13-18

A difficult stretch of closing holes begins with ‘Princes’, a long par 4 that runs down to a green besides the old clubhouse of Prince's Golf Club, a venue that itself staged The Open in 1932. Finding the narrow fairway is not easy, with four bunkers lying in wait for anything slightly off line.
