We almost always prefer manual transmissions when they are available, but the GTI’s six-speed dual-clutch automatic is excellent as automatics go. Handling is another GTI standout feature. It is nimble and responsive and feels flat around corners despite its tall frame. Most important, the GTI is well coordinated and predictable, responding just as you’d want to steering and throttle inputs.
