How to identify VW engine?
These engines are normally marked with a VW recycle symbol and an X at the end. Engines with the re-manufactured symbol, a letter, a number and ending with X, indicates a VW Exchange engine. Before Oct., 1968 the X was not stamped onto the block.
Where is the number located on a VW engine?
If you are buying a new motor:
- The displacement (unless a previous owner has modified it)
- The original fuel induction system and if it has been changed from the factory
- The original application: whether it came from a bus and which year, or from another vehicle (Beetle, 411, Porsche, Vanagon)

Find the engine code on your Volkswagen Caddy
The serial number containing the engine code of your Volkswagen Caddy can be found on a sticker attached to the door on the driver's side. If it's not there, check under the hood.
