I set my right hand thumb nearly on top, maybe angled just a hair. It's the only way I could keep my right v tight and also I have slightly weak grip with both hands. Setting it this way is give me a solid position at the top of my swing. At the top the shaft just sits perfectly in the v formed by thumb and forefinger.
