Just my opinion, but isn't 17-4 cast stainless just about the hardest metal in the golf business? I believe that Cleveland casts their putters in this material, but didn't PING irons used to be cast from the same material? I remember dad always saying how tough it was to hurt a PING iron, LOL. From what I have read in my limited time on golf sites, most mill guys like 303 and not so much on the 304.

Thanks for a really informative answer. I'm getting quite geeky about metals!! I have a Mizuno MP-T102 putter which is 1025 carbon steel - it must be anodized or something as a finish. I also have a MD golf Norman Drew Killarney which is supposed to be machined from a solid block of carbon steel.

The hardness of the metal does have an effect. I have a couple of 17-4 Ping putters and they have a much firmer feel than the 303 and BeNi (Ping) putters I've tried. All these putters have a flat face, no milling lines.

A comment on annealing - Annealing will absolutely make steel feel softer because that is what it does. You heat the steel up to the appropriate temperature and sustain that temperature so that the material refines its grain structure then you allow it to cool slowly. Once you allow it to cool it retains the new grain structure.
