Form Over Function

On the subject of the interior, it seems like every notable new car these days launches with its fair share of mild controversy. The Mk8 Golf is no different, including the fact that the base, non-performance model isn't even offered in this continent. Enjoy it, Europe. VW wants us in a Tiguan or, better yet, an ID.4 instead.

Early Verdict

If you can get used to, or at least forgive, all of the touch-sensitive shenanigans—and that's a huge ask on VW's part—and focus on the drive, the new 2022 Volkswagen Golf GTI and Golf R are both very good cars.

The 2022 Volkswagen Golf R: An Introduction

The Best Feature Of The 2022 Volkswagen Golf R: The Tailgate Latch

You might be asking yourself, with a car capable of such amazing performance, it’s beginning to be considered too perfect, why would HotCars name the tailgate latch its coolest feature? Well this, is Doug DeMuro here to explain, visually:

Other Unique Features Of The 2022 Volkswagen Golf R

In what North America will consider its most unique feature, the Golf R will receive a six-speed transmission.

1. Injectors Nozzles – 1.9TDI ALH Mods

The factory injector nozzles for the ALH, like many other factory parts, are extremely restrictive limiting the fuel delivered to an engine. A simple injector nozzle upgrade can increase power by 15-20hp. Injectors inject fuel directly into the engine where combustion is then created.

2. Tune – 1.9TDI ALH Mods

A tune and nozzle upgrades will provide the biggest bang for your buck when you are upgrading an ALH engine. A factory tune is designed for comfort, efficiency, and everyday drivers. An aftermarket tune, without upgraded nozzles, can add up to 30hp alone.

3. Clutch

A reliable clutch is crucial for an engine to use the power it has. Once upgrades start piling up on the 1.9TDI, the factory clutch will start to slip. The factory clutch was not built to withhold up to 100hp. A clutch connects the shaft coming from the engine to the shaft that turns the wheels.

4. Mufflerectomy

You may be reading this and wondering what the heck is “mufflerectomy”. Essentially “mufflerectomy” means is removing the muffler from the exhaust of the 1.9tdi ALH engine. Now, this is not something that has to be done because the performance benefits may not warrant it, but the sound will.

Bonus Mods for the Ones Who Want More

This is where the real power comes from, but this is also is where more money is spent and engine reliability decreases.

5. Upgraded Turbo

The factory turbo on the 1.9tdi ALH is a VNT-15 that puts out 90hp and 155lb-ft of torque as listed above. If you are wanting to get more boost and more power in general, you’ll have to upgrade the turbo. There are many turbos to choose from, but from scrolling, it looks like the most popular was the 17/22 turbo.

6. Upgraded MAP Sensor

This may seem like an unnecessary mod, but believe us you will want to do it. The factory 2.5-bar MAP sensor only allows up to 18psi of boost. If you purchase the above turbo, that’s 7psi of boost you’re missing out on. The sensor provides intake manifold pressure info to the engine.

Ignition Coils & Spark Plugs

Before we get started with this mod guide, let’s talk a second to talk about ignition coils and spark plugs. We highly recommend changing all of your spark plugs and all of your ignition coils to ensure you get the full sense of performance out of your engine and mods.

1. MK5 GTI Aftermarket ECU Tune

A tune will almost always be the biggest bang for your buck when it comes to performance mods. The tune that comes out of the factory has much more conservative settings because not everybody buys a GTI to be aggressive believe it or not. Engine performance is one of the many reasons why we suggest a tune, but certainly not the only reason.

2. Aftermarket Downpipes

An aftermarket downpipe, often referred to as DP, is an important part to upgrade if you are going for real power. It connects the turbo to the exhaust system. To ensure the MK5 GTI’s are compliant with emissions, they come standard with two catalytic converters.

3. Aftermarket Intercoolers

A mod that never gains a lot of attention is intercoolers. Yes, it may not be a purely performance mod, but it is an efficiency and reliability mod that allows a lot more power compared to the stock unit.

4. Aftermarket Intakes

Now, these last 2 mods are always argued as a waste of money, but we’ll dive into them now and give our opinions. Air intakes should not be bought strictly for power output. However, compared to OEM intakes, aftermarket intakes bring in a lot more air. The more air the engine pulls in; the more power the engine kicks out.

5. Aftermarket Exhaust

Like the intake, an aftermarket exhaust doesn’t provide much power gains, but it will provide an aggressive sound that we all strive for. Sound aside, an aftermarket exhaust does reduce backpressure because typically the diameter is a little bigger and less restrictive.
