Round summaries

2013 champion Justin Rose birdied his final three holes to shoot 65 (−6), equaling the record for lowest round shot in a U.S. Open at Pebble Beach, and taking a one-shot lead. Xander Schauffele eagled the 18th hole to join Rickie Fowler, Louis Oosthuizen and Aaron Wise in a tie for second.

Media

This was the fifth U.S. Open televised by Fox and FS1. During Fox's primetime window in the first round, FS1 offered coverage hosted by Justin Kutcher following the group of Justin Rose, Jordan Spieth and Tiger Woods, and the group of Viktor Hovland, 2018 champion Brooks Koepka, and Francesco Molinari.

Winner: Dustin Johnson

This time, the other Bash Brother wins the major. Dustin Johnson, after finishing runner-up to his frequent workout partner Brooks Koepka in the PGA Championship, will return to No. 1 in the world with his second U.S. Open title.

Dark horse: Adam Scott

At 28-1, 30-1, Scott is too good to pass up. He’s a supreme ball-striker, a must at Pebble Beach. He finished second at the Memorial and tied for eighth in the PGA Championship in his last two starts. If he gets the putter cooperating – and it has of late – he’ll be right there come Sunday’s end.

Winner: Dustin Johnson

Rory McIlroy goes 64-61 on the weekend and almost made me change my pick, but I’ve thought all season that Dustin Johnson is the man to beat at Pebble Beach. He won the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am in 2009 and 2010, and should have won the 2010 U.S. Open here too, but he wasn’t mature enough and imploded.

Dark horse: Billy Horschel

Ranked 39th on the Official World Golf Rankings, Horschel has a solid all around game, with his only real weakness being that he’s average driving the ball. As our colleague Eamon Lynch stated in last week’s “Eamon’s Corner,” the U.S.

Winner: Dustin Johnson

Yes, it’s tempting to pick Tiger Woods at the site of his best major performance ever. But how about DJ atoning for his worst major golf instead? He’s come a long way since that final-round 82 in 2010 and is playing really well of late.

Dark horse: Brandt Snedeker

Two-time winner at Pebble Beach and playing great golf the past two months. U.S. Open has been his best major with four top-10 showings in his last eight starts, and we wouldn’t be totally shocked to see Snedeker leaving Pebble with a victory on Sunday.

Winner: Rory McIlroy

Why? Because no one rides a wave better than he does, and he’s cresting right now. A 64-61 weekend in Canada – powered by a hot putter – served notice to his fellow competitors. The swagger is back.

Alan Bastable

To-win: Webb Simpson, +5,500. Shows up at virtually every major, but especially the U.S. Open, where in his past three starts he’s gone T10, T16, T8. Webb will finish his career with at least two major titles — might keep picking him until he proves me right.

Josh Berhow

To-win: Collin Morikawa, +2,550. In form and an absolute lethal ball-striker. Let’s see if he can get streaky with his putter.

James Colgan

To-win: Xander Schauffele, +1,500. I’m not sure I believe it. In fact, I’m fairly sure I don’t believe it. But somebody has to keep the mantle of picking Xander to win in every major, and it might as well be me, with the X-man at his home course.

Dylan Dethier

To-win: Will Zalatoris, +4,650. A quick scan of the clumped odds reveals that Vegas is just as confused about who is “supposed” to win this as we are. But Zalatoris is way too far down the odds sheet, so grab him at this price — while you can.

Jessica Marksbury

To-win: Jon Rahm, +1,050. I know, I know, picking the favorite isn’t very original. But hey, give me a player more likely to pull it off this week! Rahm was on fire before Covid stymied his run at the Memorial, and he’s won at Torrey before.

Zephyr Melton

To-win: Scottie Scheffler, +3,500. Since the beginning of 2020, no one — not DJ, not Brooks, not JT — has a lower cumulative score to par than Scottie Scheffler. He’s 18 under in majors since his T4 finish at the 2020 PGA Championship, and his worst finish in that time is T19 at the Masters.

Nick Piastowski

To-win: Brooks Koepka, +1,900. I’m likely making this pick for every major going forward for the next decade. I have little reason to believe otherwise. He loves that edge — and now he’s got a whole month’s worth of tweets to back up. Koepka wins. Maybe easily.
