My guess is that it is a supply/demand thing. Us ho's are willing to shell out more for a "special" long iron. We wouldn't do it for a set 3 iron or 2 iron.

My guess for that space in most peoples set they have the option of driving iron, hybrid, or fairway wood. The driving irons like the new Srixon are basically old school hybrids as they are hollow, more forgiving, and easier to launch than player cavities.
