The Passat TDI through model-year 2014 used an AdBlue diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) tank and selective catalytic reduction (SCR) aftertreatment to deal with NOx emissions. These cars simply received an ECM reprogramming. 2015 Golf Sportwagens used SCR as well. In these cars, a two-phase fix was implemented.

Why did VW lie about emissions?

On December 10, Volkswagen Chairman Hans-Dieter Pötsch made a public admission: A group of the company's engineers decided to cheat on emissions tests in 2005 because they couldn't find a technical solution within the company's "time frame and budget" to build diesel engines that would meet U.S. emissions standards.

Does full tank petrol last longer?

Filling up a tank halfway compared to a full tank of fuel only reduces the weight by 2.5%. At this level it is likely to make very little difference on the vehicle fuel economy. We suggest if your drivers are regularly driving to advise them to fill the tank all the way to the top when they visit a petrol station.

Is it better to keep fuel tank full?

If watching out for your fuel line and gas tank weren't enough, your fuel pump could also become affected if you don't keep the tank topped off. When you run low on gas, your fuel pump can begin sucking in air. This can cause the pump to heat up to a dangerous level or fail over time, resulting in expensive repairs.

What is the best speed to save fuel?

The Energy Saving Trust says that the most efficient speed you can travel in a car in terms of achieving the best fuel economy is 55-65mph. Any faster, though, and the fuel efficiency decreases rapidly. For example, driving at 85mph uses 40% more fuel than at 70mph (oh, and it's illegal too).

My new VW Golf requires 95 RON fuel, which is seldom available and I must generally buy the even more expensive 98. But 94 RON E10 is widely available. Is this a satisfactory substitute for 95 RON, or could I combine it with the occasional 95 or 98? Will a lower than recommended octane rating do any harm to the engine, reduce efficiency, or both?

How many miles does a 2015 Golf TDI cover?

EPA-rated at 45 mpg highway, the record-setting 2015 Golf TDI covered 8,233.5 miles in traversing the 48 contiguous states while burning 101.43 gallons of Shell diesel that cost a total of $294.98. While your mileage will most assuredly differ, Gerdes claims “it is possible to get truly impressive mileage results by using just a few simple fuel-saving techniques.” In addition to a set of Goodyear Assurance Fuel Max tires designed to optimize fuel efficiency, this record-setting VW also fitted with a Linear Logic ScanGauge II to precisely measure fuel usage. LG G4 smartphones and a Garmin Nüvi 57 LM GPS unit were used to meet Guinness World Record tracking requirements.

Who has the lowest fuel consumption?

Another high mileage mark is now in the Guinness World Records book as hypermiling whiz Wayne Gerdes and co-driver Bob Winger managed to stretch the existing "lowest fuel consumption — 48 U.S. states for a non-hybrid car" record to an impressive 81.17 mpg.

Where is VW headquarters?

Starting out from VW’s American headquarters in Herndon, Virginia, on June 22 and returning July 7, Gerdes bettered his own 77.99-mpg record set in a Golf TDI back in 2013 and beat the 74.34-mpg Guinness benchmark for hybrid vehicles . Also: Class of 2016 — New Cars Ready to Roll.

It’s not just a standard direct-injection engine with a modified fuel delivery system though. Instead, the mill runs on the Miller combustion process which makes it more suitable for use on natural gas. This process generates low carbon emissions and maintains high efficiency thanks to a compression ratio of 12.5:1.

What is the injection pressure on a Jetta?

While it can be cost-prohibitive for those on tighter performance budgets, the 11mm injection pumps used on automatic transmission cars makes for a great little factory upgrade for manual transmission Jetta owners. For reference, the factory Bosch pump on manual transmission Jettas is a 10mm version. In addition to the increased volume its 11mm head provides over the 10mm head, the 11mm pump produces a peak injection pressure of 19,000 psi vs. 16,500 psi on the 10mm unit. This means better atomization, which in theory equates to more power, in addition to a cleaner, more complete in-cylinder burn.

How to wake up 1.9L TDI diesel?

The quickest, easiest way to wake up the ALH 1.9L TDI diesel in ’99-’03 Jettas is to reprogram the ECU. Big names in the tuning game for these cars are Kerma TDI, Malone Tuning, Rocket Chip Performance and TD Tuning. The general consensus on gains with the stock injectors and turbo still in the mix is 25 to 30 hp, but in our own chassis dyno experience we’ve seen a 33hp gain using Kerma TDI’s tuning, made possible via the company’s Q-Loader programmer.

What is the power package for a Kerma TDI?

For folks looking to push their TDI into 200whp territory, Kerma TDI offers a complete power package that includes its DLC Race 520 nozzles, VNT-17 Plus turbocharger, 3 bar MAP sensor (more on that below), ARP head studs and a Colt Cams Stage 2 camshaft with lifters. To keep EGT cool and the clutch from slipping, Kerma TDI also throws in a side-mounted intercooler and a Stage 3 Endurance clutch kit from South Bend. A second injector nozzle option, the popular PP764 nozzle, also offers a path to 180whp or more.

How much horsepower does a 1019 nozzle have?

A more moderate nozzle upgrade (also from Kerma TDI) is the DLC 1019 nozzle, which can yield as much as 60 additional horsepower (at the wheels) and 110 lb-ft over stock with the factory turbo still feeding the engine.

Is the ALH’s Mileage Really Unaffected by Mods?

Our high mark so far with our own ’03 Jetta TDI has been 51.6 mpg. It’s graced with a set of balanced Stage 1 injectors from Kerma TDI fitted with Bosio DLC 520 nozzles, Kerma TDI’s custom ECU calibration to match the injectors and South Bend Clutch’s Stage 2 Daily clutch. The VW might only make 120 hp at the front wheels (up from 72hp stock!), but the 250 lb-ft of torque that’s on tap at low rpm makes passing cars in fifth gear positively effortless. Despite these mods, the car gets the same 49-mpg average it did when we picked it up in bone-stock form four years ago.
