The law of the tendency of the rate of profit to fall

hi I am fairly new to Marxism, I read a couple of works but I can't grasp the falling rate of profit, I get the whole capitalist A finds the new machine which makes it possible for him to sell his commodity at a lower price and decrease the variable capital increasing constant capital to the point that it will eventually come to a situation where everything is automated and human labour is written out of it, and here comes my question if the profits of the capitalists come from surplus value extracted from the workers and there are no workers because automated machines replaced them then what happens? Because going with that would mean that capitalism just fails on its knees without the profits, but some part of my brain can't comprehend it why can't the capitalist make profit with constant capital itself ie the machines that would operate themselves? I am sorry if it's a dumb thing to ask I am still really confused about many things, and I just spend two whole days and nights trying to make it click in my brain..
