Must be cultural....I've noticed Korean men doing the same around here. Me being culturally naive and knowing that it's close to 100 degrees, I don't see how they can be comfortable, but hey, if they like it.....I love it.

in the asian culture, the shade of skin is an indicator of social status. the wealthier a person, the lighter their skin should be hypothetically cause they work in an office, etc. the darker skinned people are looked down upon as manual laborers. it's really stupid, but that's the gist of it.

All of us that do a lot of fishing in the southeast wear long sleeve shirts for sun protection. There are many new fabrics that are "breathable" and soft are not uncomfortable. You may see them in the Columbia and Patagonia sites.

Being Asian myself, I can say that it's mostly, if not all, about beauty. Non-American born Asians prefer girls with white fine skin as opposed to tanned one. I think this applies to most east and southeast Asia. Not sure about other regions. For some genetic reason or whatever, Asians won't become tanned.
