Build And They Will Come

The Doubted Dozen

BUILDING BIG BEN

What is the signature hole of the front nine?

DRUGA : This is the signature hole of the front nine. It’s a long par-4 that’s very, very strategic. If the player takes it down the right side of the fairway, he has a much, much easier angle shooting into the green than if he drives it to the left. If you take it down the right side and miss, you’re into some scrubby, sandy, not very pleasant area. It’s one of the very few blind tee shots that we have. You can’t see the fairway from the tee, so you’ve got to get your sightlines down in practice to pick a spot.

How many yards does a new tee add to the DRUGA?

DRUGA: A new tee adds about 40 yards, and now it’s a much different angled tee shot to 2004, which makes the fairway narrower than it was then. It’s not a comfortable tee shot. This is the first hole where the long hitters are going to have an advantage, because the average hitter won’t be able to get it to the bottom of the hill in the fairway, but the long hitter will and he’ll be able to have a flat lie.
