I don't know how to avoid sounding elitist based on the prior posts in this thread. Let me also preface this by saying that I played muni golf for 25-30 years before joining private clubs.

Every private club is different when it comes to rules. I'm lucky enough to have belonged to 3 clubs and played at many others. My favorite is the club I belong to in Florida. The only written rule that we have is "a game should take 3 1/2 hours". Everything else goes without saying.
