What is George Wright's golf course?

When it comes to Municipal Courses, at the very top of the list, in a league of its own, is the George Wright Golf Course. Unfortunately, those unfamiliar with the Hyde Park and Roslindale neighbor-hoods of Boston would never know this world class municipal golf course is located in the heart of the city. This famous Donald Ross designed public golf course started construction in 1929 just as the market crashed and the country was in the throws of the Great Depression. Finally opening in 1938, George Wright Golf Course has since rose to national acclaim after a redesign effort was completed by New England staple Mark Mungeam. Since then, the course has received several notable and prestigious national awards including “the #59 Best Public Course in North America,” by Golf Magazine (2021). With its exceptional layout, stomach turning blind shots and a clubhouse that looks like its straight of Hogwarts, George Wright is clearly in a class by itself.

What is Butter Brook Golf Club?

Another one of Mungeam’s designs, the Butter Brook Golf Club is actually a tale of two courses. The front 9 is a classic New England style course in every sense of the word. Accuracy off the tee and precise approach shots are a must when trying to keep the ball in play. Well placed hazards and bunkers will keep you honest when hitting your way towards the green. The back 9 plays more like a links course with its wide-open fairways, lack of trees, and undulating greens that roll as if they were lined with silk. Ask almost any golfer as they walk off the 18th green what they think about the course and they will tell you “it’s as good as advertise, if not better!” No wonder Butter Brook Golf Club is a “diamond in the rough.”

1. The Ranch

Daniel: All around the best golf course design in MA. Place is pristine. Experience is awesome. Most memorable part of the experience was the opening hole. We were so excited to play this track we’ve heard so much about.

2. Farm Neck

Daniel: Where to start with this place…easily the most gorgeous golf course I’ve played in MA. So many great holes along the water. Every hole fun and playable. Great risk-reward scenarios. It’s going to challenge you. But in all the right ways. You won’t worry about losing your ball all day.

4. Pinehills – Jones

Daniel: Hard for me to pick between these two so I’ll do a single blurb for both. Pinehills is the best public golf facility in MA. Between the two courses, practice facility, clubhouse, and service, you truly feel like a “member for the day.” Both courses offer awesome views, pristine conditions, bomb-able fairways, and loads of challenges.

5. Red Tail

Daniel: There’s a very important characteristic shared between the top five courses on this list: they are all designed for the average hacker to feel excited and free to take out driver on most every hole. I like to be challenged, which Red Tail does. But when I think about Red Tail, I think about how fun a driving course it is.

6. George Wright

Daniel: Hard for me to not rank this one higher…tremendous old school course. A lot of people in the area look down on it because it’s city-run but they could not be more wrong.

7. Granite Links

Daniel: I know this is one of the most talked about public courses in MA but, full disclosure, I hated this place. Only time I’ve been was in the windiest conditions I’ve ever golfed in, which I assume is pretty common on the high and exposed layout. Every tee shot is a forced carry. While wide, it at times felt overly penal.

8. Ledges Golf Club

Daniel: This course is maybe the only thing that’s ever made me want to live in Western, MA. Drive up a hill behind an elementary school to discover an inexpensive, challenging 18 that’s always in good condition.
