I tend to think it is what you are comfortable with (within in reason of course) and perhaps whether or not you are familiar with the course. As long as you maintain pace of play (or faster preferably), I say play what you want unless the course mandates.

I think if you can break 80 from the whites, you can move back a box. If I went someplace long where the whites were close to 7000 yds, I'd move up a box just to make it more fun. I don't want to make a course too easy, but I don't want to be suffering the whole time either.
