Do you and the wife really need separate checked bags? If anything, cram as much as you can in one checked bag (keep the most essential toiletries in your carry-on), the remainder in the golf bag. Bring a large, empty duffel bag. If you buy a lot of stuff, employ the duffel bag--then pony up the extra baggage charge on the way home.

Not wise to over stuff a suite case, as its likely to be opened and possible it won't be properly re-closed; which is how people lose items. Better to put toiletries in checked luggage too; otherwise you'll have to throw away most bottles with any form of liquid before entering scanner.
