Has anybody made a DIY vice for holding an iron club head so you can adjust the lie yourself?

Pigems

It's only $3/$5 to have a club bent, much cheaper then buying a machine

Nessism

I think you could replicate Ping's bending method fairly easily if you have a heavy duty bench vice and some homemade hosel clamps. You will have to fab up something to bend loft too, but lie can be done with a rubber mallet. Of course you need a spec gauge after bending.

pmcuk

I should have said right at the start that I have an inclinometer and magnetic spirit level for measuring lie - it's perfectly good and I don't need anything more elaborate, so I don't need a loft-lie machine for the measurement at all. Thanks Nessism - that's a really useful DIY club holder for lie adjustment.

Nessism

Not wooden blocks. They are metal, aluminum I presume. You should be able to get a block of aluminum and drill/ream it for the proper hosel size. Then saw the block right down the middle of the bored hole. Sandwich the hosel with your blocks and clamp it tight in a sturdy bench vice for adjustment.

curran22

Personally I prefer my Mitchell steelclub as I do not have the ingenuity as Nessism. Those are some pretty slick tools. Hats off bro!

High Plains Driver

I had a Mitchell Steelclub+ for years, and it was awesome. However, I rarely have the need to alter loft of lie now, other than the occasional wedge, so I use this:

Introduction to Build Your Own Home Golf Workshop

If you’re reading this post, you likely decided it was time to start doing your own golf club work and you’re trying to figure out where to start. You’re not looking to be the next great builder, but you want to be able to work on your own clubs and maybe help a buddy out from time to time.

Why Do Your Own Club Work?

I will be the first person to advocate using a top-tier professional club builder for all of your golf club work, but the reality is there are a lot of us that have that “tinkering gene” in us. Not only that, but I’m too impatient to wait for my clubs to get back to me. Naturally, I decided I had to be able to do a lot of my club work myself.

Tools to Get Started

It’s important to understand what you’re trying to do and what level you’re looking to get into. If you’re starting from scratch and have no building experience, you’ll need a jumping off point. I recommend a few basic tools that will allow you to perform the following:

Regripping

You can use the regular razor blade, but the hook blade makes cutting off old grips a breeze.

Shaft Pulling & Installation

A key tool for shaft installations. Will be used to drill out stubborn epoxy, shaft tips, cleaning hosels, etc. Also get yourself a nice set of drill bits of varying sizes.

DIY Golf Club Repair Tool Upgrades

Now we’re into more upgraded tools if you decide you want to get a little more serious with your work, but still don’t want to go nuts with big time equipment and big time price tags.

Bonus Tools – Nice to Haves

The first thing you need in any shop is what I consider to be my most critical tool – the Bass Pro Shop trucker hat. While not necessarily a golf work tool, it’s clutch in the work shop. Given it’s not directly related to golf tools, that’s why it’s in the bonus section.

I've started re-gripping clubs myself at home, but I do not have a work bench and have limited space. I've been re-gripping with the free rubber "vise" clamp that sort of stabilizes the club, but I've noticed two issues. First, I had extra space on the butt end of the club which left kind of a wiggle so I had to re-grip that club.

That vise is not worth the time. I do not use a vise. I simply apply solvent in the grip and on the tape and slide the grip on to the shaft that im holding in my other hand. Cutting grips off requires more attention necause of the risk of cutting yourself, but I have not had any issues.

drumdude96

Short of having an actual gripping station, a vise and shaft clamp is your best bet. There are vises that have like a c-clamp on the bottom that will allow you to temporarily mount them on the edge of a table. Either that or you might try getting a free-standing bench grinder stand and see if you can possibly mount a 4" vise to one of those.

Not a bad idea, but it still needs to be mounted to a bench or table that the OP evidently doesn't have. I believe that is the main issue here.

RookieBlue7

Wilton Super Junior or Irwin clamp on vise. Both have screw type attachment that will be secure. Clamp it on a counter/table top and be done. I prefer to install with air but if you insist on using the old method of solvent, you want a vise. Makes life easier
