We were going to have 8 golfers and do a 4x4 Ryder style mini-tournament one weekend. Unfortunately one of the golfers has backed out. We still want to do a teams format, but I'm struggling to come up with a fix. Obviously we could put the three best golfers on one team and have them go up against the other four, but are there other ideas?

While that's the logical step, we can't. It's a long story but the 8 have been traveling together every year for 15 years golfing and going to sporting events. While not every year everyone can make it, we restrict the number to the original 8 to avoid headache and logistical challenges. Again long story, but the short of it is we're set at 7.

Uneven numbers is a real problem with match play since you're not going to sit a player. Whatever you fix this way, well, it's a fix. You have options if you choose stroke play team competition, though.
