I just started playing around with the SwingTip analyzer and it gives you tempo numbers. I didn't know what the numbers meant, so I started reading a little bit about tempo. It appears that 3:1 backswing to downswing tempo is recommended. How important is this?

Thanks Nine Miler! Curious if this is truly that subjective or if it is worth working on. I've tended to take driver back incredibly slow. I'm working on quickening the backswing, slowing the transition, and then obviously getting through the ball with some speed.

BenHoganSlam1953

But I think the tour tempo gurus have looked at swings of amateur / recreational players, and they see 4:1 and 5:1 ratios and backswings too deliberate. So instead of trying to mimic the 3:1 tempo, one can just add a bit of pace to backswing.

GolfNuts4

Yeah, I have a very slow backswing and tend to pause at the top. My pro is telling me to speed up the backswing as he wants to see me with a bit more "tempo", right now he says I have too slow of a backswing, then accelerate too much from the top.
