on golf clubs what give more head feel, a lighter or heavier grip?

by Dr. Zoe Weber Published 3 years ago Updated 2 years ago

Lighter grips will make the head feel heavier (increasing swing weight) whereas heavier grips will do the opposite making the head feel lighter. And, the firmness of your grip ought not be overlooked.

Golfers with swing speeds below 100 mph will benefit from heavier grips because they move the balance point of the club closer to the hands, in effect making the clubhead feel lighter.

Feedback

There are a lot of factors and feel is always very subjective, so almost anything is possible. But it's not really all that typical or a reliable method. It certainly doesn't make the actual resistance any greater when looking at the actual physics of the golf swing.

Thanks as always Sturat_G. I love lead tape and have used it in the past. I’m trying to adjust to graphite shafts and may resort to lead tape. Thanks again!!

Feedback

I know installing a lighter grip will increase swing weight slightly but I don’t know if it’s that noticeable unless it’s a drastic change.

Thanks for the insight! I’m transitioning to Recoils coming from Px steel. Big difference in overall weight for sure. Love the feel of Recoils, just hard to get the feel right off the bat. I’ll get there hopefully.

Feedback

Definitely agree with Stuart regarding the handling of grip weights here. Personally I NEVER try to adjust the feel of the club's heft with a grip, that is the wrong tool for the job, like trying to influence how your car tires grip the ground by changing the seats.

How does the golf swing affect the proprioception of the golfer?

Although the golf club is one single unit, the weight distribution across that single unit has clear effect on the torque and momentum felt. The "feels" will impact the golfer's proprioception; their ability to track the position of the club head through space. A club that is too light makes it more difficult to track the club (easily tested by turning a club upside down and swinging it at a target). Weight that is positioned further away from the hinge point in the swing (fulcrum) has more impact on the overall force felt.

What does it mean when the swing weight is set the same?

Expand. If the swing-weight is set the same with the lighter shaft, it means there was an increase in actual head weight, .....which moves the balance point towards the head. Is swing weight a dynamic balance?

Swing weight is not a dynamic balance, as the name implies. It is based on a static balance and in technical terms described as “first moments”. This means that to balance a beam you need to add a weight to one side at a certain distance from the fulcrum (balance point) and an equivalent amount of weight to the other side at the same distance or half the weight at twice the distance. Through this balancing procedure a telephone pole can be “swing weighted” to D2 the same as our driver. But the overall weight is significantly different.

Is MOI better than swing weight?

This is why MOI balancing is a much better method than swing weight for balancing a set of clubs – certainly if swing weight is manipulated by back weighting etc. MOI is a dynamic balance and clubs so balanced will be close to the PURE swing weight balancing as it was originally developed based on Francis Ouimet’s set (first amateur to win the US Open in 1913 at 20 years old). This set was assembled by Francis Ouimet based on club feel with length and head weight being the only variables and the results closely match MOI matching.
