I used to wear Van's to the range (what I wear almost everyday), but then I found my shoes would wear out very quickly. So I now use by golf shoes which are much harder and more durable so that my normal shoes will last longer.

Agreed. I wouldn't fall over, but my feet will move and definitely affect my swing. Some people might not notice the difference, but that might mean you don't use very much of your lower body in the swing.

Sounds to me like you need better balance. I can swing my driver upwards of club-head speeds around 120 mph and a 320+ yard drive is not out of the question; in my regular shoes on a mat have no problem with slippage.
