The bushes are prone to wearing, and as a result the bar does get excessive play in it, resulting in a knocking noise. Otherwise, check out the ball joints and wheel bearings.

Why does my rack and pinion clunk?

On the passengers side the rack is held on with a clamp and the driver's side is a direct bolt-on. The clamp can get worn out and cause the rack to shift, causing the clunking. I've seen this before. When doing this, also see how much play on you inner tie rod ends, since they can also cause a clunk.

What causes a knocking sound in the front of a car when turning to the right?

The ball joints connect the wheels to the suspension systems. What is this? They allow the wheels to rotate properly when turning left or right. If these ball joints start wearing off, they will start causing banging, grinding, or knocking noise when turning the steering wheel.

What causes clunking sound in front end?

A front end clunking noise going over bumps is most often caused by damaged control arms or suspension struts. Often, this kind of damage happens if you use your vehicle for off-roading adventures—or there are a lot of potholes on your daily commute.

When I turn my steering wheel I hear a knock?

When you turn a steering wheel, it's the tie rods which enable the wheels to move in response. A loose or damaged tie rod will create a knocking, clunking, or creaking sound. This is especially true when you turn at lower speeds. It may even cause your steering wheel to be off-center.

Why is my car clunking over bumps?

Damaged or Worn Control Arms Worn-out control arms may cause the wheels to move out of alignment, which causes the vehicle to make the clunking as you steer the wheels on a bump. The damage may be extended to the body mount and cause the cab compartment to vibrate.

Why does my car make a noise when I turn left?

The most common causes of noises when turning is a bad coil spring, struts, or shocks. It could also be caused by a bad steering rack, tie rod ends, or worn ball joints. If you hear a growling noise when turning it can be a bad wheel bearing.

Do ball joints pop when turning?

The outer tie rods connect the power steering system to the wheels. These tie rods are ball joints but they are not the "ball joints" people commonly know (just the same style joint, but different part). This ball can dry out and when it does it will make a popping noise when the ball rotates inside of its joint.

Any ideas before I book it in to be looked at? Seems to come from front right side although I know it could transfer from anywhere, only does it at start/pull away, no specific driving just when first moved after stopping and not just cold but during journeys too?

Twitch

Clunking noise from hard turning usually points to a CV joint being dry and worn out.

Does it sound anything like this on my car? I had drive shaft replaced which made it a bit better, then had wheel bearing and hub replaced and sound disappeared.

I had this, the clip holding the CV boot on wasn't secured correctly from factory. All the oil leaked out and had to replace the whole joint. Only made the sound around car park speeds at full locked but it got progressively worse.

How to check if passenger side rack is bad?

The passenger side rack mount has a rubber support held in place by a clamp. this rubber can go bad and the rack will make small movements causing a clunking sort of noise. The best way to check is at an alignment shop. You can have the car in the air with the wheels supported.

How to check if steering rack is moving?

More specifically, check to see if the rack moves when you turn it. Have someone move the steering wheel slightly back and forth continually while you're looking at the rack. On the passengers side the rack is held on with a clamp and the driver's side is a direct bolt-on. The clamp can get worn out and cause the rack to shift, causing the clunking. I've seen this before.

What happens if your steering wheel is moving but the ends are stationary?

If the steering wheel is moving very slightly but the ends are stationary, then you have a bad inner joint. While you're down there, check the swaybar end links and the swaybar bushings since they can also clunk when worn out. They should all be tight with no slop (movement) in them. Let us know what you find.

How to tell if inner tie rod ends are worn out?

You will see how worn out they are by grabbing the shaft and feeling for play, and by watching the ends move with relation to the steering wheel while it's moved back and forth. If the steering wheel is moving very slightly but the ends are stationary, then you have a bad inner joint.

No clunking, but steering rack movement is apparent if you have someone else just turn the wheel with the tires on the ground.

Is it cheaper to replace a control arm bushing or CV bushing?

Control arm and sway bar bushings are less expensive to replace than CV axles if you do most/all of the labor yourself, so that would be the next things I would inspect/replace.

Can CV joints clunk?

I wouldn't think a CV joint would clunk if you are not driving forward or backward, but mine will clunk if I'm in park too. Just another point to help diagnose...

Clunk noise in front end

Front differential
