When using Android auto it works fine but if I turn the ignition off then on again it won't recognise the phone I will have to unplug and replug USB connector for it to work again.

Before bothering with VW I would rule out the phone if you can. Get a hold of another android device and test. Having that will rule out an issue with just your phone. It’s not the car. It’s either your cable or your phone. When I got my R it would never stay connected. It would either fail or disconnnect constantly. It was very annoying. Then google pushed an update and it worked perfectly. So either something is going on software wise or it’s the usb cable. Try another.
