Baltusrol holds a cherished place in golf’s rich history. It has hosted 16 national championships. The giants of golf have walked its fairways for more than a hundred years: Bobby Jones was here. So, too, were Walter Hagen, Gene Sarazen, Ben Hogan, Byron Nelson, Sam Snead, Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, and, of course, Tiger Woods. Talk about Founding Fathers! Even George Washington maneuvered troops over this land during the Revolutionary War. Baltusrol has the distinction of being the only 36-hole facility to host a U.S. Open on both its courses. Jack Nicklaus won two of his four U.S. Opens on the Lower course (the one I played). Even with such an illustrious history, Baltusrol isn’t nearly as well known as places like Shinnecock or Pebble Beach…#N#Baltusrol is not a course with many memorable holes. It has no ocean, lake or mountain range to frame it. Rees Jones said it perfectly: “You may not remember a lot of the holes, but you remember they are interesting and challenging to play.” Even Lee Janzen said, “It’s strange, but I went back after winning the U.S. Open there, and I didn’t remember all of the holes.”…#N#After we hit a few balls, Bob and I and our caddie were off. The caddie’s dad had been a career caddie at Baltusrol, and he had been there eight or nine years himself, so he knew the place like the back of his hand. I needed it, too. The breaks of the greens are clearly affected by Baltusrol Mountain, and the greens are very tricky with extremely subtle, hard-to-read breaks. As helpful as my caddie was, I had a poor score, but it was a fun day overall. Larry Berle.#N#November 18, 2014

What is a golfer's dream?

A Golfer’s Dream, by Larry Berle, tells the story of how a regular guy conquered America’s Top 100 Golf Courses (following Golf Digest’s 2001/2002 list). Larry has exclusively rated for us every course in the hundred, using our golf ball rating system. However, Larry did not rate the 100 courses against every golf course he has played, but instead he rated them in relation to each other within the hundred. Consequently, in some cases, his rating may seem rather low. A Golfer’s Dream is available in Kindle format and also on Kindle Unlimited via Amazon... click the link for more.

Second hole

At least one day during the week — and hopefully at least one of them is the final round — the PGA will move the tee up to make this a drivable par-4. Either way, a risk-reward decision has to be made to either lay back before the blind cross-bunkers, or carry them to leave a short wedge shot into a tricky, well-guarded and sloping green.

Fourth hole

This is the “signature hole” on the golf course, and the water and stone wall that front the long par-3 are beautiful and intimidating. The green has a lot of large slopes in it, and the top-left pin position, sitting atop a small ridge with a bunker in front and deadly rough over, is going to make par a great score.

13th hole

The story goes that this was Tillinghast’s “obtuse” design, and that when Bobby Jones essentially lost the 1926 U.S. Amateur here, it became inspiration for No. 13 at Augusta National. Either way, the left-to-right diagonal drive over a creek means the farther right you hit it, longer you have to carry and the closer you’ll be to the green.
