How do I know if my golf shaft is too flexible?

If the shaft is too flexible, you will have a 'whippy' feeling in your hands, and you won't be able to feel the clubhead on the downswing. When the golf ball is struck it will generally have too much spin if the shaft is too flexible, this will cause a 'ballooning' effect on the shot and it will tend to go quite high.

How do I know if I need regular or stiff shafts?

If you have a slower swing speed, you are probably going to want to choose regular shafted clubs because the additional flex will provide a little more power and accuracy. When you swing harder, the stiff flex will be more controlled and give you the punch you need to hit better shots.

What happens if your iron shafts are too soft?

Using an iron shaft that's too soft for you will also affect the flight of your golf ball. Your golf ball will consistently fly much higher than you intended if you use an iron shaft that's too soft for you. This is because of the extra amount of flex caused by using an iron shaft that's too weak.

I play the Nippon 950GH stiff flex (not the Neo as it is too light) and have found it to be a great shaft for a swing speed lightly above yours. I tried it in a set of clubs I bought and then went to Club Champion for a fitting where it won the shootout among the shaft options available there.

I appreciate the response! I do feel like I'm on the edge between regular and stiff flex shafts. I think I'm leaning regular because I tend to strike my irons better with a slower, more deliberate swing. I start missing the middle of the face when I speed up too much.

Feedback

If your in between you can always hard step a regular or soft step a stiff. Or use something like the project x 5.5 that plays fairly stiff.

Feedback

I should add the R7s are stiff flex, I think DG300s. Pretty sure that was the stock shaft for that iron.

I do really like everything I'm reading about the Modus 3 105. The 950GH Neo I was swinging felt super smooth. The regular was just maybe a bit too light, but I definitely felt it load. A little less loading with the stiff, but a little. The weight of the stiff felt better.

Feedback

Went with the regular flex Modus 105 T. Now for the wait while they are built.

Can you extrapolate your swing speed to driver?

You should consider that your swing speed for your irons might not extrapolate perfectly to driver (and vice versa), so while a certain flex might be right in some clubs, that might not be the case in others.

One thing to remember, every degree you bend the loft you increase or decrease the sole bounce. Increase loft equals regressive bounce, decrease equals negitive bounce. I'm not sure who bent your clubs 4* but I wouldn't go back there. 2* is OK, 4* could damage the hosel. I'd work with different shafts to achieve your desired ball flight.

I use Glide wedges, and the 50 is very strong for some reason, so no reason to adjust.

What is your stock pw distance and your stock 50* distance. For me, a stock pw is about 132. I can push it to 135 or choke down and go about 125. With the 50*, I max out at about 117 to 119, but then I get a ton of spin and end up at 112 to 115. So, I have a ten yard hole.

I have a 45-degree Vokey and a 45-degree P790. I don't notice much of a distance variation between the two of them, so I'm currently playing the Vokey for its versatility. I have Vokeys in 45-50-54-60 and P790 in 4i-9i. I do have a slightly bigger gap between my PW and my 9I, but it's just a few yards larger than my other gaps. It's not a big deal.

uglande

I don't find that the "hot face" is as pronounced in the higher-lofted P790s. I think the gapping issues, if any, on that end of the bag are more a function of loft. Long story short, I don't have any problem going from P790 9-iron to Vokey PW, and I think it would work for you to go from P790 PW to the Wilson gap wedge.

zeke013

This is a great question. I am currently struggling with the same issue. Over the last two years, I have played the P790 up through the PW, then added three Vokeys at 50/54/58 (but all bent 1 degree strong).

Jetierney13

When I was gaming the 790's I went PW then 52,56, 60 and never seemed to have an issue with gapping.

nsxguy

Don't have the 790s but my G20 PW is 44. Had 50, 56, & 64 and was constantly getting "stuck" at yardages between my PW and 50 917 yard gap 105/122) and between the 50 and 56 (about 105/85) and I hate taking something off the stronger club and/or muscling up on the weaker club (probably because I'm not very good with it LOL).
