What is a trackman?

What Is Trackman? Based on Doppler radar, TrackMan is a technology that allows us to measure, in realtime, what the golf club and golf ball are doing in time and 3 dimensional space. When a golfer hits a shot, TrackMan generates a unique data set – 21 specific measurements that accurately identify the impact and ball flight conditions for that shot.

Series Navigation

Golf is an individualized sport, meaning there are millions of ways to get the job done and post a low score. Most golfers understand this fact, and don’t need to be convinced of it. What the majority of golfers don’t understand is the ONE thing that ALL great ball-strikers have in common.

Overview of Impact and Ball-Flight

Unbeknownst to many golfers, there is a ton going on in the world of physics from the moment the club touches the golf ball to the moment the ball lands near (or not so near) the target.

Club Face to Club Path Relationship

Thanks to the invention of Trackman and other flight simulators, we have learned a great deal about how different angles and relationships between the swing and the club produce various ball-flights.

Angle between the sole of the club and the ground

Consider a scenario that you might face while hitting on the range. You have just hit a perfectly solid shot, and it has started right of your target, and has traveled perfectly straight.

The Gear Effect

So far, we have determined the conditions that affect the flight of a golf ball assuming the ball was struck on the center of the clubface. But what happens when you miss the center of the clubface like many golfers frequently do?

Putting Everything Together

Hopefully by now, you have a much greater understanding of what factors influence the flight of the golf ball. Although there are still many other factors involved in the flight of the golf ball, you should now at least be able to explain to yourself why your golf ball keeps slicing, and fix it accordingly.

By Dan Suedbeck

I get asked this question more than any other when it comes to people wanting to improve their swing.

Swing Speed & Efficiency

This category reveals the key metrics behind how far a person can potentially hit a golf ball and if that potential is being reached.

Lateral curve

From an instructional standpoint this area of numbers is where I spend most of my time when working with a student.

Launch conditions

How a player launches the ball tells a story of how he/she is delivering the club into impact. The consistency of a players attack angle and club path are two of the biggest factors I see that differentiate a good player from an average one.

What is the swing direction of a golf club?

Swing direction: Swing direction is the orientation of the club face in relation to the target line at the lowest point of the swing. This concept is different from club path, which is measured at the point of impact.

What is the angle of attack in golf?

Attack angle: Attack angle is the angle the club head takes, relative to the ground, to hit the golf ball. If the angle of attack is negative, you're hitting down on the ball, which you typically want to do with irons.

What is the swing plane?

Swing plane: Swing plane means the angle made between the ground and the plane of club head trajectory at the bottom of the swing arc, as measured down the target line. The higher the value, the steeper the swing. The lower the value, the flatter (or less upright) the swing is.

What is the spin axis?

Spin axis: Spin axis is the measurement of the axial tilt, when applied to the ball at impact, causes it to spin one direction or the other. A ball tilted to the right will spin to the right, while a ball tilted to the left will spin to the left.

What does it mean when the number is negative?

If the number is negative, it measures a ball landing and stopping to the left of the target line. Landing angle: Landing angle refers to the angle at which, relative to the ground, the ball first lands and hits the ground after a shot.
