It’s possible to change the playing characteristics of a golf club by adding weight to its head, a process called back-weighting. Attaching lead or magnetic tape to a wood or iron moves the center of gravity away from the face, producing higher shots.

The concept of back weighting clubs has been around for many years. Jack Nicklaus use to add lead tape under the grips. Today, interchangeable weight can be installed in the butt end of woods, irons, wedges or putter. This is called counter-balancing or back-weighting.

What does it mean when a golf club is Back-Weighted?

When a club is back-weighted, it feels more stable in the hands and moves more comfortably through the change of direction during the swing. If the club is too light in the grip, it is easy for the clubhead to leverage the hands out-of-plane if the swing is not in perfect timing.

The counterbalancing adds more weight to the butt end of the club instead of leaving it in the head where it would have traditionally been located. How tight should you grip a golf club?

You should be holding the golf club with the same pressure you would hold a small bird: tight enough so it doesn't fly away, but soft enough so you don't crush it. You don't want to choke your club to death.

Two Ways to Do It

Leaving aside the DIY methods, there are two ways to counter balance your clubs.

So you know what it is and how to do it, but the question remains, “Why should I?”

Conclusion

Much like large putter grips, I think counter weighting is something that’s worth experimenting worth, particularly if you’re struggling with some part of your game.

i tried the gs tour lock pro counter balance and it was ok...i still prefer the counter balance system from balance certified...

WeekendHacker

ifixclubs-Can I ask why you prefer the BC system? I have never tried installing either one of these so if you had install issues, I would definitely be interested in hearing about them.

ifixclubs

the gs tour system seemed like it wasnt secure even though you tightened it...the balance certified system offered different weights thats a little bit more tunable imo...and they can be re-used over and over again...

phelps22

Thanks ifixclubs. Does that mean the GS weights aren't reusable? I was hoping they would be.

astamm8

i also use the tour lock pro system. they are reusable. furthermore they are easy, in my opinion, to securely fasten in the clubs. as far as there not being as many differing weights. go here http://www.golfclubcounterweighting.com/

Generally it's the other way around. Heavier weights in your driver and lighter weights as you go down into your shorter clubs. This is because the total weight of a driver is so much lighter than your wedges. Counter balancing allows you to bring the total weights closer together, without increasing the total club MOI much at all.

Cwebb

Go with the Tour Lock system. It's the best value available. If you want to get a full system to experiment and test with for full swing clubs, I would get counterbalance weights at 8, 12, 16, 20, & maybe a 30g at the extreme heavy end.

Can you lower the swing weight of a golf club?

Chances are, you probably won’t want to lower the swing-weight of a golf club, as most golf clubs have a fairly low swing-weight to start with (in my opinion). In the past, what I have used counter-weighting for is aimed more towards making the entire club heavier than decreasing swing-weight.
